My best friend died on Christmas Day, BTW.
As Roma Gray points out – life is random.
There are five holidays addressed: Mother’s Day, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, and Valentine’s Day. I loved Ms. Gray commenting that Valentine’s Day is “the most brutal holiday and that more people have a bad day rather than a good day.” In fact, she titles the story, “All Roads Lead to Hell”.
What could possibly go wrong?
If you have read Ms. Gray’s “Love Letters”, you’ll know that love letters are not always welcome.
Ruth is a nurse working in a nursing home. Most of the residents are quietly going off into that good night, accepting of their fate. Not Emily. The nonagenarian woman is fighting tooth and nail to stay alive. Even though the cancer has almost won the battle, Emily is not willing to give up. It isn’t until Ruth comes across Emily’s trove of love letters that she understands why the older woman is so terrified of death.
Since this is Roma Gray, there are elements of the supernatural, and of course, the very disquieting. If I were facing Emily’s potential fate, I would fight tooth and nail as well. And the ending was disturbing.
All the endings in this anthology are disquieting. If you never loved Christmas, ‘A T-Rex for Christmas’ is not going to change your mind. Halloween freak you out? An old house in Maine might not be the best place to stay during All Hallows Eve. Bad things are bound to happen.
These stories create a nice little collection and Ms. Gray promises there will be more. I can only imagine what she can do with New Year’s Eve and the Summer Solstice.
Terry F. Self does another great job bringing first the right tension, using volume, tone, and pauses in perfect combination to make a terrifying story. Horror isn’t my fave, but I will always listen to Roma Gray.
The premise of each story is that the Holidays are actually a day of horror, not celebration. In this particular book, Ms. Gray examines Mother's Day, Easter, Christmas, Halloween and Valentine's Day. I don't think that I will be looking at any of these Holidays in quite the same way after reading this book! If I had to pick a favorite, I would say the story about Easter because of the heart-wrenching nature of that story.
All of the stories have a unique take on horror even while incorporating well-known creatures like vampires and werewolves. The endings of each story are unexpected and add to the scare factor. I also enjoyed the Author's Notes after each story in which the author told where the story was first published and how it came about. I continue to be fascinated by author's imaginations and always enjoy knowing more about their inspiration.
The narrator, Terry Self, is perfect for this collection. His pacing and voices fit each story and his narration added a lot to my enjoyment of these stories. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author and chose to review it.
That’s really what stands out to me most about this collection. Each story, though some deal with things we might be familiar with, is handled in a way I never would have expected.
I was easily able to imagine the settings, feel the fear, and care about the characters in each tale. The level of thought and creativity poured in these short stories is impressive. Some, like the Christmas tale, gave a me a nostalgic feeling, and others, like the Valentine one were quite disturbing. There was one that touched on a mystery I adore, I don’t want to add any spoilers, but I really loved where Roma went with the lost colony.
I want to isolate the vampire/Easter tale for some extra praise though. Not only was unique to most vampire tales, but holy moly, it was powerfully dark and heartbreaking. Again, not wanting to say too much, but wow, that one made a lump rise in my throat. Gutted.
This is a collection filled with horror, emotional and gruesome. I give it my highest recommendation.
Author: Roma Gray
This book gives a new perspective of looking at holidays. This book is not meant to be a long book as it breaks of into other books. It is a fantastic quick read. Moms are werewolves and son wants to become one. What do Valentine's letters really mean. Dinosaur come to life and a father must believe!! Vampires with a whole town cult following. Yes you truly get some perspective in this book. Does have religious tones but how they are used will make you think twice about entering a valley. I glad Roma let us know there was more to come or we could find stories in other books. This truly was a thrilling haunt to read!!

My favourite story is the Easter feast, as the concept of it is pure evil and an unusual plot. I hear there is a part 2 coming out, so I'll definitely be reading it.
