I've read the introduction to Volume One, and I've discovered an incorrect paragraph break on page ten. Also, every sixth page throughout the three volumes is light on the ink, to the degree that the text is almost unreadable. Are there three volumes or four volumes in the short story collection? The Zola Society shows three volumes, but the introduction to Volume One indicates there are four volumes.
Lastly, and more concerning, the introduction in Volume One is attributed to Emily Pardoe, but the same introduction-- written by Douglas Parmee -- is found verbatim in the 1984 edition of "The Attack On The Mill and Other Stories, published by Oxford University Press. I pointed this out to the Zola Society Publisher, and I've yet to receive an explanation.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2011The blurb to this volume claims that these are "new translations by contemporary scholars." This statement is absolutely false. I have a copy of the 1896 Vizetelly translation of "Stories for Ninon". I compared Vizetelly's translation of "To Ninon" with the one offered here. It is virtually identical: on the first page, the only change is one word: "whilst" becomes "while". Grotesquely, this first page even includes one of Vizetelly's typos: "unobstrusive" instead of "unobtrusive." The packaging is great - but the translation is one of the stodgy Victorian renderings that have been putting readers off for a century.
To be fair, it's a good idea to collect Zola's short stories in one set, even if the translations aren't new. That's why I decided to rate this collection above one star. But lying about the source of the translations is simply unforgivable. Like many buyers, I'll be looking at future offerings from the Emile Zola Society with considerable suspicion.
