A terminally-ill girl is lured into a fantasy world with a chance at a cure, but magic has a price. High school senior Madeline, struggling with a deadly lung disease, eagerly exchanges a year of service with the Elenil for her health. Meanwhile, her skeptical friend Jason Wu, worried for her safety, follows along and trades a year of his life for a pudding cup each day for the rest of his life. They find themselves in a world where young humans are recruited to serve and fight in wars against the Scim. While Madeline delights in her ability to breathe freely in the Sunlit Lands, Jason is busy investigating the rules of magic. The Elenil heal wounds, have magical toilets, and give him a war beast whom he names Delightful Glitter Lady. It is too good to be true―until you ask, where does all the poop go? And who accepts the wounds when these young soldiers are injured? Although at times heavy-handed with the religious imagery and social messaging, the issues this story brings up are relevant to current discussions about poverty and cultural extinction. Madeline is white and blonde, Jason is Chinese-American, and their culturally diverse friend group in the Sunlit Lands includes an Apsáalooke and a Native Hawaiian boy. For Narnia fans who enjoy heavy snark, this is a must-read. Kirkus Reviews

Funny, thoughtful, and exciting!

Funny, thoughtful, and exciting!
What I noticed first about this book, was that it was very well written. I was so pleased to open the cover and give a sigh of happiness that I had placed myself into the hands of a talented writer who knew how to spin a tale. The characters grabbed me right away and the humor made me want to keep reading. I love funny books and don't find them as often as I would like. Epic clashes and fun fantasy creatures and difficult choices throughout the book. The story also made me think and ponder the world we live in, a place of want for some and privilege for others. I loved it and would recommend to fantasy fans, teens, and parents of teens who want the story to come first, followed by a thoughtful message of redemption.

Wow! Just wow! What an absolutely brilliant, mesmerizing ride! The Crescent Stone is a thrilling journey of trials, challenges, and redemption in a magical world. Madeline Oliver is dying from a disease that ravages her lungs, filling them with scar tissue. She’s rejected her boyfriend, lived through the stages of grief (mostly), and grasps at normalcy by attending her high school classes. She’s surviving pitying looks, the kindness of strangers, and the distant love of her parents. When Madeline is offered a healing in exchange for a year’s labor, she accepts the gift of life, not knowing the true cost of the exchange.

Jason Wu comes to Madeline’s aid when she faints in chemistry class, beginning a friendship that he clings to for redemption from old mistakes. While Madeline is a wonderfully strong heroine who matter-of-factly accepts that hers is a road she must walk alone, it is Jason’s wit, truth, integrity, loyalty, and perseverance that light up the story. He also provides comic relief even in the direst moments of their adventures, whether it’s his costumes, his truth-telling, his fighting prowess or lack thereof, or his beloved unicorn steed (i.e., a rhinoceros), Delightful Glitter Lady (aka DLG and Dee). Luckily, Jason has a magical embiggenator to shrink or enlarge Dee as the circumstances require. As the fool, Jason draws our eye to wisdom, as Madeline draws our eyes toward courage and justice.

Jason and Madeline have embarked on a journey that will take them beyond our planet to the magical world of a beautiful people with dark intent, a war-loving race seeking justice and revenge, and two mysterious and mythical kings, one a peasant, one majestic. It is a world fraught with bodily peril and soul-searing revelations, courageous warriors, walking legends, and social injustice. It might just be a world where Madeline and Jason, along with their companions, can be heroes.

Grab your Kleenex box and your highlighter, because The Crescent Stone is going to grab your heart and not let go, and the pithy quotes will endure a lifetime. You will race your way from adventure to adventure, from revelation to revelation, and from defeat to triumph. Friends will become enemies, and enemies will become staunch friends as plots and hidden motives are revealed, and the story turns from light to dark and dark to light.

Don’t miss the legends and stories in the appendix; they’re as meaningful and wise as the main tale. As some stories end, “this story bears three gifts: one for the storyteller, one for the hearer, and one for the heart which understands.” Dear reader, these gifts are for you and me. We leave this story entertained and enlightened beyond measure.

I cannot express how much I loved this book, how well it works on so many levels, including as an adventure story and as an allegory. There is so much wisdom and so many insights to be gleaned. Highly recommended for those who love fantasy, Christian storytelling, allegories, and simply brilliant writing. I’ve not read any book by Matt Mikalatos previously, but I’m so taken with The Crescent Stone that I’ll be grabbing the sequel when it’s published and checking out his previous work while I’m waiting. I believe Mikalatos’ writing is right up there with Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Brandon Sanderson, and the other fantasy greats. Simply an amazing book that I was sad to put down. I’m already impatient already for the next book, The Heartwood Crown.

I received this book as an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) through NetGalley. My opinions are my own.

This one was recommended by Reads With Rachel. It's a great fantasy story about a teenage boy and girl who enter into a magical fantasy world, with the girl choosing to serve the Elenil for one year just so she could breathe normally again. It is here where they find out how the Elenil's magic works, and that leads them to making an important decision on what to do regarding the source of their magic. It's got good characters, some of which are humans who were drawn into this world to fight the Elenil's enemy, the Scim, and they share important things about what they lived through prior to entering the fantasy world. Definitely worth picking up and reading, especially with the short stories, poems, and proverbs that appear in its appendix.

This book features a unique twist on the portal fantasy genre. Madeline’s plight is compelling, the world is complex and engaging, and while the social commentary is a bit heavy at times, it’s done in a thought-provoking and even-handed way. The humor also shines through with the character of Jason Wu, who is simultaneously hilarious and tragic. The ending is unexpected and yet very satisfying, and I look forward to finding out what happens to these great characters in the sequel.

The Crescent Stone is an imaginative portal fantasy with a powerful message of power having a price.

Madeline and Jason are two teens from our world who are drawn into a new magical world. Since Madeline has a fatal lung disease that is slowly killing her, she takes an offer to serve in the Sunlit Lands for one year in exchange for her complete healing. Jason agrees to go to help Madeline, in exchange for pudding.

As the two learn to work with the Elenil, the people who brought them over to help with their constant battle against the Scim, they discover the amazing world around them. But they also learn that power comes at a price, and they will have to make choices that have drastic consequences for themselves and the people around them.

Mikalatos has created an in-depth world, complete with a smattering of folktales and poems in the appendix. Madeline and Jason are characters you care about, and Jason especially steals the show. With tension, drama, and moral quandaries, he makes you think beyond a simple fantasy adventure. You may agree with his conclusions or not, but it is a quality book that brings questions along with a whole lot of entertainment.

Highly recommended for fans of fantasy and young adult fiction.

My husband and child are reading this book. They are on chapter 27 and are enjoying the dynamic, deep story. My child is often telling me about something funny in the book, or something mysterious that she is trying to figure out. They are deeply engaged in the world Matt Mikalatos created and we will be buying the sequel!
(Plus as a parent I appreciate the clean way this book is written. I don't feel like it's exposing my daughter to anything I wouldn't want her to read).

I had been in a reading funk for a long time (grad school!) and I needed something to help me dive back in. I listened to the podcast All Things Charity and their interview with the author, Matt, and how he talked about his intentionality with diversity - I knew I needed to read this.
I love good fantasy fiction and this is excellent. The characters and story are well developed. The book is enjoyable, intentional, and worth the read. You will be hooked.

I LOVED this book! The characters felt very relatable and I loved the world that Matt Mikalatos has created for the characters to interact with. I did suspect that something was up with the seemingly perfect world and I was not disappointed! I loved the discovery that the Scim are really more than what they seem on the outside. I also loved the commentary on how the same experience can be different depending on which side of history you're on. I really hope to see this world grow into a better world for all in the coming books!

Not usually a sf reader, I ordered this book as a fan of the author’s non fictional work.
This novel, I read quickly, engrossed with the suspense, poetry and insights about humanity.
I can’t wait to read the heartfelt crown (so glad the Sunlit Lands are not like the Tales of Meselia...)
