Eva Kosmas Flores grew up in Hillsboro, Oregon, where she worked alongside her parents at their family’s Greek deli. Although she was always passionate about cooking, she received formal training in film and photography from Loyola Marymount University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2009. She began her blog, Adventures in Cooking, that same year, and her affection for food and photography has grown continuously since then. Eva has received formal baking training from King Arthur Flour and has contributed to several print and online publications, such as Chickpea magazine, Food52, Anthropologie, sisterMag, Crate & Barrel, Design Love Fest, West Elm's Front + Main, The Green Gallery, and One Kings Lane. She currently resides in northeast Portland with her husband, Jeremy, two dogs, a cat, and seven chickens. When she's not digging out in her garden or making a mess in her kitchen, she can be found with her nose buried in a good food history book. She has a soft spot for stinky cheese, her beagle’s muzzle, kneading dough, beekeeping, and the movie Moonstruck.

I ignored the reviews that hated the photos etc. While the the photos and the book are really stunning, the recipes are fabulous. I was able to check this out of my local library to see if it was worth purchasing. I have so many recipes bookmarked. I do wish you could see more of the recipes in cookbooks on Amazon to be able to see if a cookbook is for you but I guess the concern would be recipes would just be copied. This cookbook is a keeper. I am super happy I purchased it.

Let me first say, this is an absolutely beautiful book, as is the blog of Eva Flores, and I am only giving 5 stars for her content. I think all the reviews that mention a broken spine must have gotten the same book. Mine arrived quickly, but that's about all I can say positively about the condition of the book. Not only was the spine broken and corners bent, there was an instruction sheet for some sort of shelf tucked inside (to the person who left it in there-I hope you don't still need it). This is not an inexpensive book. When I pay $45.00 for a new one, I expect to actually get a new one. I've since ordered one from eBay, at least I know upfront it will be used.

I thought Eva's first book was amazing (photography, recipes, total content) until I received her second book, First We Eat. It's more than I expected on many levels. It's not only a brilliant cookbook with doable, realistic recipes but it's also organized in such a way that you are literally getting a glimpse into how to stock a pantry, organize your kitchen and just be a better all-around home chef. A lot of what initially draws me to a good cookbook is the aesthetics of how it's designed -- everything from chapter organization, recipe content and the amazing photography keeps me coming back to it more and more. I'm working my way through all the recipes and haven't found one that I didn't love.

This is one of the prettiest cookbooks I've ever seen. The food Is well thought out, creative, and not overly ambitious for the home cook. The ingredients are seasonal- which I appreciate. It's easy to open it to the corresponding season and find something for dinner. Eating seasonally allows for fresher ingredients with more nutrients and flavor, and also keeps the cook from getting bored. Every time I open this book, I flag more recipes to try. I have Eva's first cookbook and eagerly awaited this one to come out as well. I was not disappointed! The photography and food styling here is almost coffee-table worthy, and yet you can actually MAKE this food to eat and enjoy! I love this book!

Great photography! If you are looking to expand your skills and flavors this is a great book to use! Call's for some unique ingredients at times that may not be easily accessible for all, but I will be able to put this book to great use! Not very family-friendly or for little appetites but I didn't purchase this book for soccer nights lets just say that! GREAT for girls night dinner parties or dining alfresco! Eva is very creative and this book speaks to those looking to expand their pallets. Overall very happy with this book! Let the creative juices flow :)

I have been following Eva Kosmos Flores for years and so when First We Eat arrived on my door step of course I anticipated only the best but, much to my delight this book exceeded my highest expectation. I was captivated by Eva's artistry in storytelling, recipe development and photography. So much so that I literally sat down and turned each page one at a time while reading her story and soaking in her amazing photography. It was as though I got transported into another world and I didn't want the story to end. The story doesn't end there however as now the recipes begin and I am so looking forward to that journey. I am an avid collector of cookbooks, with all 450+ incorporated in my kitchen, and this one just took first position on my favorites shelf.

This is my new favorite, go-to cookbook. I just sat last night and gobbled up her words, her beautiful photographs, her connection with food, growing things, and cooking. She brings so much to the table with her experience helping in her Greek dad's deli, majoring in film, and converting her backyard into a lush garden. I can't say enough good things about this. I just ran out to buy 6 organic lemons to make the preserved lemon recipe in her book. Salut, Eva, or, Yassus!

I have this by my bedside and I am literally reading this front to back. I am a cookbook collecting junkie and this honestly lived up to reviews of a very well written engaging book. I would love to meet Eva and cook with her and explore her garden. I didn't realize she was of Greek Decent and I fortunately worked for a great greek man for 13 years and spent a lot of time in Greece. She does her heritage proud. Great book for any foodie or to gift...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos & Flavours

I haven't bought a cookbook in years, but wanted something new to help me cook with the seasons using local produce. Although this book is from the Pacific Northwest, many of the ingredients track along with our seasons in Ontario. For those that don't, I'm just making adjustments as I go along. The photos in the book are well done and the authors comments are helpful. I almost took a star off because the binding doesn't seem very strong. I returned the first copy I received as the binding was coming apart. This second copy is better, but still has a weak part. However, I decided to just keep it as the book can be hard to find in stock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Non un semplice libro di ricette
Reviewed in Italy on September 4, 2018
