The Conductors (Murder & Magic Novels) Kindle Edition
Hetty Rhodes and her husband, Benjy, were Conductors on the Underground Railroad, ferrying dozens of slaves to freedom with daring, cunning, and magic that draws its power from the constellations. With the war over, those skills find new purpose as they solve mysteries and murders that white authorities would otherwise ignore.
In the heart of Philadelphia’s Seventh Ward, everyone knows that when there’s a strange death or magical curses causing trouble, Hetty and Benjy are the only ones that can solve the case. But when an old friend is murdered, their investigation stirs up a wasp nest of intrigue, lies, and long-buried secrets—and a mystery unlike anything they handled before. With a clever, cold-blooded killer on the prowl testing their magic and placing their lives at risk, Hetty and Benjy will discover how little they really know about their neighbors . . . and themselves.

Review
--Tananarive Due, American Book Award winner, author of Ghost Summer: Stories
"Community dynamics mixed with a magical alternate Reconstruction-era mystery. The Conductors has all the elements I was looking for in a good story."
--Mary Robinette Kowal, Hugo Award-winning author of The Calculating Stars
"An Underground Railroad--but with magic. With compelling characters and wondrous worldbuilding, Glover weaves a tangled mystery of murder, spellwork, and freedom amid the remnants of slavery's lingering memories."
--P. Djèlí Clark, Nebula Award-winning author of Ring Shout
"Nicole Glover blends historical detail and magical elements into an unforgettable debut. The Conductors is a wholly original and thoroughly riveting story. This is no doubt the first of many brilliant books to come."
--Deanna Raybourn, New York Times best-selling author of A Murderous Relation
"With The Conductors, Nicole Glover creates a fascinating world where even magic is segregated. She effortlessly weaves both the constellation-based magical system and the real life struggles of being Black in post-Civil War America. The characters, led by former Underground Railroad conductors Hetty and Benjy Rhodes, are as intriguing as the mystery. It's hard to believe this is Glover's first book. I found it as enchanting as one of Hetty's spells."
--Kellye Garrett, winner of the Anthony, Agatha, and Lefty awards and author of Hollywood Homicide and Hollywood Ending
"The Conductors is a conjured novel. Reimagining a past that helps us navigate our present, it weaves a rich tapestry of history and magic to create a story of resilience and resistance through the power of Black girl magic. It's the perfect book for our times."
--Maurice Broaddus, author of Pimp My Airship
The Conductors is a wildly inventive alternate history that combines compelling characters, a propulsive plot, and lots of intrigue. It is also radical as hell. Thought-provoking and powerful, Glover's novel is a must-read.
--Cadwell Turnbull, author of The Lesson
"Inventively mixing mystery, magic, and alternate history, Glover's nail-biting debut takes readers to Reconstruction era Philadelphia...Glover is a writer to watch."
--Publishers Weekly (starred review)

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2023This is amazing it's like so many books in one thriller, murder, mystery, romance fantasy, historical. And I am here for every mixture of it I find myself sneaking off to read it. And I just got the second book today. There is going to be two more books in the series and I can't wait for them. Also I find Hetty helping me speak and carry on conversations throughout my day and she has become a friend so I look forward to more of her and Benjy in my life. Kudos to Mrs. Nicole Glover for such a captivating book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021I agree with other reviewers that occasionally awkward pace and difficulty connecting with main characters for two-thirds of the book takes away from overall enjoyment of this debut novel, which I ordered based on a glowing story in my local newspaper about the young, Norfolk, Virginia author. She could have done with a better editor to make her people real and redirect her preference for exposition over character development. The Philadelphia setting didn’t come through; minor characters appear as if significant but are never heard from again. It’s a sketch of an alternate but still repressive post Civil War universe. I wonder if the author intended the relatively flat affect of Hetty and Benjy to depict the survival skills of formerly enslaved people used to hiding in plain sight to survive. Hard to tell. White people still hold the more powerful magic, which explains why Black people still are in jeopardy from systemic racism. It’s inventive but still plausible, since Celestial Magic is a wand-less adaptation from natural elements and astronomy. Only whites can legally own or use wands. I hope this world is more developed and emotionally connected in the next novel but by the end, I began to care about Hetty, Benjy, and their community.
I enjoyed the central mystery and there’s a wild finish followed by a too convenient re-set to establish the sequel due in November. Looking forward to a more skilled approach. Glad someone took a chance on a young writer.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024I’m going to start with what I perceive as problems with this book, and finish with its strengths.
When I bought The Guardians I didn’t realize that it’s second in a series. Sometimes that doesn’t matter, because an author will include enough information so the reader isn’t floundering at unexplained references.
That’s not the case here. There are constant references to past events and relationships between multiple characters, but minimal or often obscure explanations (the flashbacks, or “Interludes,” as the author calls them, notwithstanding). I wish I had read The Conductors first. (I did subsequently buy it, although I haven’t yet read it; it’s next on my list.)
Another issue is erratic pacing. Scenes tend to be short, and they jump from one to the next abruptly. A number of times I found myself confused, had to stop and reread a previous paragraph, only to realize that the characters had changed locations or were now talking to different people.
When I googled the author and visited her website, I saw that book 1, The Conductors, has been optioned by Queen Latifah and the Jim Henson Company, so a movie may result. That might explain the odd pacing in book 2—maybe the author was writing with a future script in mind? Whatever the reason, the story does not flow. The narrative is jerky.
And the characters themselves interact oddly. Are they friends or enemies? They constantly take umbrage at each other, converse obscurely, and whisk themselves away over perceived insults. Often they seem to be working at cross purposes with no explanation as to their motivation. Why do they keep stumbling over each other? It gets tiring. The main character herself, Hetty, is hard to like. She takes being independent-minded to extremes, to the point where she is insulted whenever anyone disagrees with her. To say she is prickly and hard-headed is an understatement. It wasn’t until nearly the end of the book when she unbent a little. By that time she had grown on me, but it wasn’t easy.
Also, what do they all look like? This may be the only book I’ve ever read with so little description of physical appearances. Are the characters short, tall, fat, thin, pretty, handsome, plain, ugly? Any distinguishing features? One character is described as having brown skin the color of parchment, but that’s about it. Sometimes authors go overboard describing every little thing, but in this case there is too little description. That, combined with the characters’ sometimes baffling behavior and dialogue, makes them hard to relate to as real people.
My final criticisms are nitpicks over grammar. The author sometimes mixes verb tenses, specifically when she starts a sentence with the past perfect tense and then drops it for the simple past tense. Every time that happens it pulls me out of the story. The other thing is the use of “who” when it ought to be “whom,” and the use of “that” when it ought to be “who.” I think Hetty would be mortified to find herself using bad grammar. The author owes it to Hetty’s dignity to correct that.
Having said all that, I like this book.
There are several paranormal series set in alternate histories, but the premise here is really original, in a genre that rarely produces originality anymore. A magic-imbued post-Civil War era, where blacks as well as whites have access to arcane power, is more than a little enticing. And the system of “Celestial Magic” is beautiful and intriguing. I want to read more.
The immersion in an African American POV is blessedly refreshing. There are whites, but except for one particular character who functions as an antagonist, they mostly serve as a faceless menace, a cause of past agonies, a force exerting unspecified pressure, something to be avoided wherever possible. In fact, to Hetty and her friends and by extension to the story, they are mostly irrelevant in the day-to-day. It’s kind of a relief. (Disclosure: My race is white, my ethnicity is Hispanic.)
I look forward to reading The Conductors. Maybe it will help me understand everything that puzzled me about The Guardians.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2021I don't read fantasy books, but this mystery with a magic touch just surprised me. I felt it was the right balance for me of magic and mystery. Hattie is such a strong person in this story. Her caring nature and her determination to finish the task at hand. No matter what danger Hattie and Benji face, they seem so calm in their situations. Since they are married, you read about the touching and the eye stares they give each other or the hand-holding, so you get the idea they love each other would be nice to have a little romance for them, maybe in the next installment.
It took me a while to read because the print was a little too small, so everything seemed compress on every page, but the story is so entertaining I had to finish. I am looking forward to the second installment. Well done, Nicole Glover.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2021This was wonderful. A take on a magic system that I hadn't seen explored this way before in a setting that took empowered the narratives of the enslaved and focused on their work to free themselves and their rich and full emancipated lives. The addition of many multifaceted and deeply real relationship was the cherry on top for me. Nicole Glover has joined my short list of "auto buy authors"!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2023I could not put this book down. It had so many twists and turns. I had trouble keeping up with all the different characters but it was a good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Spins the plates of historical fiction, fantasy, mystery and romance – and makes it look easy.
In the last few years I’ve fallen off reading sci-fi and fantasy, but the description of Nicole Glover’s The Conductors was so fantastic that I just had to take a punt, and I’m glad I did. It’s one of my top books of the year, for sure, and I’m amazed that I haven’t seen more people raving about it. Glover spins the plates of historical fiction, spec fiction, mystery and even a smidge of romance – and somehow makes it look easy.
Set in Reconstruction-era Philadelphia, the titular Conductors are Hetty and her husband Benjy, who had once worked on the Underground Railroad helping escaped slaves to freedom. Now, post-civil war, the pair maintain regular jobs in town, while keeping up a side gig untangling the problems and crimes that the local police aren’t trusted with.
Glover excels at implicit storytelling. The murder mystery at the heart of The Conductors is rooted in the closeknit community that Hetty and Benjy are part of, a network of mutual aid groups helping each other where the system has left huge gaps.
Hetty herself is an incredibly likeable main character (she being our point of view on this world), a mixture of smart, wilful and skillful, whilst having some very human and relatable anxieties. Glover has a real gift for pinning down the vagaries of human thought and memory, and wistful regret. Hetty’s relationships, both with close friends and her husband, are well established by the time the book starts, so it’s fascinating and engaging watching them develop over the course of the story as different stressors arise and subside. And it’s this, too, that makes the mystery so suspenseful and engaging. You owe it to yourself to read The Conductors

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A good story, well told, with an insight into some difficult history.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much magic, too little narrative
I tried to like this book, I really did, but I just couldn't get beyond the first few chapters. It started with an encounter that seemed like it should be dangerous, but which the main characters solved without effort. There were then some establishing introductions, fair enough, before the main characters decided to do something that, again, should clearly have been difficult and dangerous but where the obstacles were effortlessly overcome by magic... and at that point, I just stopped caring. I was almost 1/5 of the way through the book, it still didn't feel like the main story had started, the characters seemed to be able to get through anything by the means of magic that didn't seem to have any drawbacks or a coherent metaphysic, and the writing was... fine, but there really wasn't anything to keep me very interested.
It's not a bad book, and possibly it picks up later, but in a world with so much good YA fiction this was just comparatively mediocre.
- KazReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 30, 2021
2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, weak, no atmosphere
There are no descriptions of the environment and atmosphere, which is non-existent as a result, no analysis of the characters, so they have no substance, and some random anecdotal scenes that sometimes pop up with no connection to the rest of the story and are never explained (flashbacks, dreams? No idea, and what do they add to the story, anyway?). The element of magic is also poorly integrated and feels very dry. It is sometimes used in irrelevant, gratuitous ways (e.g. just to get something from across the room). If magic was removed from the novel altogether, it could easily be adjusted and still work.
The style would need to be greatly improved and elaborated and the details developed substantially for the story to have some depth. As it stands, it’s a very weak and at times confusing story. For a mystery novel, there's nothing gripping about it and falls rather flat.
