The Marabout's Secret: The Hussar’s Love Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

The marabout, Hajji Omanah, is dying. Known throughout the vast deserts of Africa as a hermit and devout follower of Islam, Omanah has been keeping a terrible secret, one that has been plaguing him for years. On his deathbed, he plans to reveal it… to his son. What his son doesn’t realize is that he’s soon to be caught up in the middle of a vicious feud going back over a generation between two powerful European families. Forced to leave France in disgrace, the embittered Albin Richemonte is determined to avenge himself on Hugo von Löwenklau and his entire household. Desperate to escape desert exile, Richemonte concocts a brilliant scheme to cheat the marabout’s son of his rightful inheritance, and by doing so rob the Löwenklau’s of theirs as well. In the meantime, rumours of war between France and Germany abound, leading the Prussian High Command to send Hugo’s grandson Richard on a dangerous mission into the heart of the enemy. There, he will find himself face to face with his grandfather’s greatest nemesis.

Robert Stermscheg was born in Maribor, Yugoslavia, in 1956. His parents were of Austrian descent, and due to his father’s profession as an electrical engineer, moved to various countries in his early childhood. His father kept a steady supply of Karl May books to broaden his education and exposure to the developing world. The family moved to Canada in 1967 and settled in Manitoba. Robert was involved in hockey, chess, skiing, and flying, but always kept up his interest in the German language.

His repertoire included about forty Karl May books, which he read over and over again. He developed a passion for sharing his love for these books and turned to searching for English translations.

Robert retired from the Winnipeg police service in 2006, and now had the time and opportunity to pursue his dream of writing with purpose. His wife Toni suggested that he consider a translation project. She supported him with encouragement and volunteered to be a proofreader. Robert began his trans¬lation work with this volume, The Prussian Lieutenant, a classic tale of conflict between the French and German peoples during the Napoleonic War of 1814.

Encouraged by the success of his first work, Robert continued with the second installment, The Marabout`s Secret, and followed up with the third, Buried Secrets. However, perhaps his most rewarding work to date has been writing his father`s memoir, POW #74324.

Top review from the United States

Book Two in the Hussar’s Love Series was just as delightful to read as Book One. (The Prussian Lieutenant.) The series picks up about twenty-five years later with the next generation of the Lowenklaus family preparing to go on a secret mission to the Sahara. However, this book doesn’t stop there. It actually spans quite a long period of time and ends with the third generation in the family coming to the forefront. It is a complex story with many storylines and added characters, all of which will weave together--if not in this book, but in the next. Therefore, it is important to read it thoroughly since these people and situations will resurface. There are a few places where there is a lot of exposition about the politics of the time which is a bit difficult to follow when one just wants to get back to the story. However, the original author, Karl May, must have thought this necessary to understand the undercurrents of distrust between the French and Germans. These are few enough that they don’t detract from the story too much, which is multi-layered and exciting, full of intrigue, mystery, dastardly deeds, and heroic acts. I’m so glad I discovered these gems and am grateful to author/translator Robert Stermscheg for doing such a wonderful job of bringing these classic adventure stories to a modern, English-speaking audience.
