Moliere's greates play

Many people and critics consider the 1666 Moliere play The Misanthrope his best play. He played the part of the misanthrope without the heavy mustache he wore when he starred in other plays. The mustache added humor to the humorous plays. But this one was not meant to be funny, although it has brief appearances of it. In contrast, this play is designed to make us think. Is the misanthrope the kind of man that people should strive to be? He hated society because he correctly saw that virtually all people were hypocrites. They said things to please others, get along with them, and get what they wanted from them. Is this a good reason to leave society? Also, how bad was the woman he loved, who was played on stage by Moliere’s wife, who told every suitor verbally or by action that she loved them? Is Moliere criticizing the society of his day? Does his criticism apply to today’s society?

Great play written by Moliere and comissioned by the French King himself. Written in late 1600s, this play is still relevant today. In five acts we meet a small circle of friends from the high society. They know each other well which leaves them prone to judging each other. A young widow is pursued by two men but is reluctant to choose between them. Her conduct is being criticized by the closest friends. But then, with the fine play with words, Moliere reminds us that we cannot judge other people as we must leave that to the higher powers. We also must be able to see ourself in the ways others see us too - so that we are aware that no one is perfect, everyone has flaws and we all have our faults. It is a tale of being able to stay above gossip and malice, rise above it and accept ourselves and people around us for what we are.

Great Play, Horrible Edition

I highly recommend this play by Moliere. I had to read this for my sophomore summer reading and it was one of the first required reading books that I actually enjoyed. However, this particular edition or publisher is a horrible translation. I often found myself having to reread a page because the wording and format was so confusing. I would buy this play, but from a different company in hopes of a better translation.
