Against a Common Menace: A Historical Western Adventure Book Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 360 ratings

Joseph Moyer is a rancher with an ambitious dream. He intends to buy up as much property as possible to expand his cattle herds, and eventually, to be able to bypass the sole but corrupt cattle broker in the area. To his surprise, it isn't only the broker who stands in the way of his plans, as someone else wants to purchase the same piece of land and expand their ranch. Joseph isn't afraid of amicable competition, until someone starts playing dirty, and things get out of hand. Now someone wants to destroy his ranch, and even worse, someone wants him dead. When everything seems to point in one direction, will Joseph know better than to pass quick judgment?

Christine McCarty is a widow with nothing left but a modest ranch and a big brother to take care of. She's got plans to expand the ranch and turn it into something less demanding of her time and efforts. In order to achieve her dream of a better life though, she must go up against another potential buyer. As if this wasn't enough, she also has to deal with her brother, Dewey, who's not as manageable as the livestock at the ranch. Dewey is stubborn and narrow-minded when it comes to making changes to save their property, and on top of that, he's a notorious troublemaker. When someone starts making trouble for Joseph Moyer, everyone believes it's Christine's brother causing mischief. Will Christine find the courage to defend her brother when she also has doubts about Dewey's innocence?

As one tragedy strikes after another, Joseph and Christine are convinced that somebody is out to get them. When someone turns up dead, the whole town wants the killer brought to justice. Everyone seems to know who is to blame, but Christine and Joseph know better... Will they manage to work together in order to unravel the truth and get to the killer before it's too late?

A pulse-pounding drama, which will make you turn the pages with bated breath until the very last word. A must-read for fans of Western action and romance.

"Against a Common Menace" is a historical adventure novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cliffhangers, only pure unadulterated action.

Born in the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina, Derek Levine's early years were a whirlwind of adventure as his family roamed the vast landscapes of the American West. After honing his skills in college, he felt the call of his roots and returned to the rolling plains of his hometown to embark on his true passion—writing tales as bold and untamed as the Wild West itself.

While Derek always had a penchant for devouring books, it wasn't until he lost a wager to his closest companion that he found himself enrolled in a lively creative writing class. It was there, amidst the dusty pages of old Western legends, that he uncovered his hidden talent and met his future wife, a fiery spirit with a heart as wild as the frontier.

Beyond crafting riveting stories, Derek's heart belongs to the Greensboro Science Center, where he finds inspiration in the wonders of the natural world. His shelves are lined with tomes of science and astronomy, reminding him of the vast cosmos that stretches above the untamed horizons. But nothing beats the thrill of hunkering down with his beloved wife to watch classic Western films, where the spirit of adventure rides alongside heroes and outlaws alike.

Derek thrives on connecting with fellow adventurers, always eager to share tales of the Old West and the boundless possibilities that the future holds.

This is a very good book, I was disappointed that the brother died. I thought Joe and Christine we're going to be able to save him. And I thought that clay should have been found guilty of killing an innocent man. But I really liked the book.

I've come to really enjoy early American westerns. Against a Common Menace by Derek Levine has plenty of adventure, intrigue, romance, mystery, and much more. I will continue reading every one of Derek's Historical Western Adventure Books that I can find.

The book was great but so sad. So many characters had flaws, some fatal. An autistic brother before such things were understood is important character in entire storyline. Epilogue tied up the loose end but the brother's murderer is allowed to escape responsibility because of a lazy sheriff.

Joseph Moyer and Christine McCarty have neighboring ranches. She is a widow, he never married. When a stranger returns to town, unexplained things begin happening. But the stranger cannot be found. Joe helps Christine when she has troubles on her ranch. They have always liked each other, but never been close. Now they have a chance but others bring more heartache.
