Centers of Gravity (Frontlines Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 9,014 ratings

Stranded light-years from home, Major Andrew Grayson and his crew are on a desperate mission to discover the Lankies’ secrets. They can’t let what they’ve found die with them.

Nine hundred light-years from home, Major Andrew Grayson and the crew of NACS Washington are marooned in a sunless system with limited water, reactor fuel, and food. The last hope for survival is to go where nothing human has gone before.

After embarking on a scouting mission to the only moon with surface signs of life, Andrew and his special tactics team make two startling discoveries. One is a dream: a form of protein and plant life that could save the starving humans in the rogue system. The second is a nightmare: this harvested rock is infested with Lankies. Far from the seemingly mindless aggressors Andrew has battled for years, these show a terrifying awareness, and they have surprising secrets of their own hidden away in the darkness.

When the Lankies sense an uninvited presence in their world, Andrew’s operation becomes an expedition to hell. The odds against his small crew are stacked high. Of all the mysteries of space, how to escape with their lives is the greatest unknown of all.

Writing this review provides a bittersweet moment, as it seems that the Andrew Grayson storyline seems to have wrapped up, and quite satisfactorily, too. While maybe not a popular opinion, I think leaving quite a bit of mystery surrounding the nature and origin of the Lankies is a smart move on Marko Kloos' part. Smart authors don't write themselves into a corner, with either story details or plotlines, leaving them no choice but to introduce some deus ex machina solution to a self-created problem. That never happened over 8 books! This series finale (?) has terrific suspense (who lives or dies) and features a small skirmish or two and then a terrific extended final battle both in orbit and on the ground. And without spoiling anything, lets just say Andrew Grayson's personal battle with the Lankies begins and ends in the same place.
I somehow lucked into Terms of Enlistment based on a recommendation on some internet forum. From that first book, I was hooked, and each subsequent volume was eagerly awaited. As for the audiobooks, Luke Daniels IS Andrew Grayson, and one of the best narrators out there, rivaling Ray Porter. I would be remiss if I didn't give proper credit to Eric Dove, for stepping into the characters with a similar style to Daniels, so it isn't a jarring difference. Taking over for a long-time narrator cannot be easy and he has handled the books with aplomb.
I've re-read and re-listened to all of the stories multiple times. Marko Kloos has really have created a magnificent science fiction saga with three-dimensional characters and gut-wrenching action. If this is the end of all things Frontlines, the series went out on a high note.

This is the final book in the series and it ends well. The story has a good mix of intrigue and action. I would rate the series as a whole with 4 stars but each individual book is probably 3 to 3.5. The sum of the whole is greater than the parts.

This series started off slow (to me). The first book felt like a very long set up for a story to come (which it was). But I don’t keep reading books I’m not into so, even that slow beginning caught my imagination.

Over the course of 8 books I became deeply attached to the central cast of characters and to the struggle for survival they experienced. These books are not a light read. They touch on many painful and heavy topics and I was unsurprised to read the author’s bio and find he was a soldier. But, even coming from this highly empathetic person, they are so worth reading. I definitely recommend.

Really loved this series. Some authors do know how to wrap up a saga. They just peter out and their books go downhill. Not so here, excellent storytelling!

I actually started these books in the wrong order, Read the one about the girl and her lanky sniffer dog. I was disappointed that there wasn't another to follow her story then realised there was all these books. What a ride. Maybe there is more coming or some books I missed. I'll certainly keep an eye out.

He’s been in the Fleet for thirteen years and survived some harrowing experiences. His last assignment put him and his crew in an entirely new class of danger. “Their collective survival probably used up all their combined good fortune for the rest of their lives” seems an apt paraphrase for the stuff they survive. Andrew is finally content to let the war move on without him because he’s embarking on a different adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a satisfying chapter in Andrew Grayson's saga
Reviewed in Canada on September 1, 2022
I just finished Centers of Gravity, and am still savoring its aftertaste as I write this. This book's plot is not complex, but it is superbly told and highly engaging. And if this is the end of the Andrew Grayson story arc, I feel more than satisfied.

The story focuses primarily on Andrew leading his team through two infiltration missions in the lankies' rogue planet system. Along the way, we get space battles, heartbreaking moments, and a chance to learn more about two strong female characters in Andrew's life. We learn more about the lankies' planet and how they make their war machines. We also learn more about the personal burden of leadership that the protagonist carries, and how he has to live with the consequences of his command decisions.

This book is a great addition (and character finale?) within the Frontlines series. The action is non-stop, the infantry combat is visceral, and the human connections between the characters help keep the stakes high. Author Marko Kloos never falls into the pit of info dumps, and his first-person writing voice moves things along quickly. For my military SF tastes, I found this eighth book to be another satisfying blend of Frontlines action, plot, and protagonist characterization.

My two complaints about this book are that I had to wait months for its release, and that there is no date yet for the next Frontlines chapter (if there is one)! I do hope there will be another book after this, as I have enjoyed this series immensely.

It did get a little emotional for me right at the end. I have loved Marko Kloos's books especially this series and i did not want this book to be over..

The story was good, the writing most of all. I sensed what was coming and even then i was looking forward to reading it.

This series is by no means over and i am looking forward to reading the other books when they are released.

    Loved it.
