The Final Equinox: A Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood Thriller Kindle Edition
Dr. Theo Cray and FBI agent Jessica Blackwood follow a deadly celestial trail in a thrilling novel by the Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Mastermind.
A signal is detected at the outer edge of the solar system. Computational biologist Dr. Theo Cray and magician-turned-FBI-agent Jessica Blackwood are looking—and listening—a little closer.
The man at the center of this cosmic mystery is billionaire Thomas T. Theismann. He’s spent a lifetime—and a fortune—trying to find out if we’re alone in the universe. Highly skeptical, Theo joins the effort to find the source of the signal, and he quickly enlists Jessica to look into the suspicious death of another academic at the lab. As their investigations converge, they uncover curious connections to the otherworldly contact, including a 1970s science-fiction writer and the body of an astronaut found buried in an ancient tomb.
As they delve into Theismann’s history, Theo and Jessica’s fascination with the signal intensifies. How dangerous will the investigation get? That depends on how deep into the unknown Theo and Jessica are prepared to venture.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2025I enjoy the Dr Cray character. He's intriguing while curious. The book is a bit too scientific at times, but it probably needs that element to convince the reader it's a credible story.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2024I wish Mayne would use chapter headings to indicate a shift of speaker. It’s always jarring to get three paragraphs in and realize the first person perspective had changed. The banter between Theo and Jessica is a lot of fun. Pretty ultimate use of pop culture at the climax.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2022In this book, Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood investigate evidence of communication with aliens: real or a complex hoax, with adventures in the jungle and murder--attempted and successful-- mixed in. This is not a book for everyone; it does depend upon some general understanding of science and technology. I am just science and math literate enough to follow the general sense of the premise and investigation, but not good enough to find any holes in the logic. (I would enjoy hearing a good evaluation from someone with a stronger background.) In addition to a plot that moves at a brisk pace, Mayne sprinkles little factoids into the narrative that add their own independent, if peripheral interest, and I find in them some compensation for what seemed like a rather quick finish. The book is well-steeped in scientific reasoning with much less attention given to the motivations of the actors so that the whys are less than satisfactory. Clever book, though and a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2024The plot overall was ok but thought the 1st book in the series was a better written story by far.
I realize the 2 main characters are written as highly educated and intelligent people but....
The author spent pages that added up to chapters on scientific and technological terms and information that I (a.) Did not understand, (b.) Had no desire to understand, (c.) Took away the tension and excitement of the story and (d.) Could have been edited out since I understood the conclusion & had skipped all the jargon that meant zero to me.
I admit, I did not figure out "who did it" but one of the main characters figured it out after hearing 1 sentence from another character. (Trying not to give spoilers.). It was both a surprise and a disappointment. There was no thrill in the conclusion, it was lacking....
The storyline was not tight & jumped again & again to new locations & new ideas with not all of them explained. If I write anymore, I will deduct another star.
I do enjoy the characters of Blackwood & Cray together. I would read another book about them. I would hope a third book would include more interaction between them. I really enjoyed the first book in the series because of their relationship & the created dialogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2024Different from his serial killers but just as interesting to read and get to Yourself involved in with all the surprises and characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024If you've read any of the Theo Cray or Jessica Blackwood novels you'll love this too. Must admit I spent a lot of time researching concepts, places, and theories presented in this novel and wonder how Mr Mayne so skillfully puts all this together. Looking forward to the next read. HooYah!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025WAS COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH PRODUCT
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025Starts out promising about deep space communication with a possible alien probe/entity 👽. But dissolves into a who done it detective novel, no sci fi here. Good writing but disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read .
It's a great read. I'm glad that Theo Cray knows what's going on because some of it goes straight over my head. That said, it's still a compelling read that keeps you unable to put it down or concentrate on anything else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing and compelling story
Great book with an unusual story line. I like the way Andrew Mayne uses science and enjoy the twists in the story. Have now read all the DarkDive and Naturalist series and I think these two Theo and Jessica books are the best yet.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow in places
Started out way too heavy on the science, I found it hard to stay interested. Improved after the first quarter or so, once the Jessica sections began to provide a change of scenery. Got overly technical again towards the end. As with the first book in this joint series the switching first person points of view were distracting. I'm not sure if I will continue with Theo Cray, but I highly recommend the author's Underwater Investigation Unit series.
