A Meme of War Kindle Edition

NO MATTER HOW FAR YOU GO, THE PAST TRAVELS WITH YOU

Mim-Mat—short for mimetic material. It's the miracle technology that has enabled humanity to rise and thrive among the stars. With it, we have conquered illness, conquered space itself.

On a journey of exploration, however, as we search for inhabitable worlds in far-flung star systems, a surprising discovery opens the door to a long-buried secret, hidden right within the human genome. And mim-mat is at the very heart of it.

A stone temple floats in the cold of space, in a solar system with no planets, not even an asteroid. This lone occupant is a mystery all its own, but within it a human crew will come face-to-face with the echoes of its own past.

A MEME OF WAR — A Novella explores one of humanity's oldest and most instinctual fears. Read it today.

Kevin Tumlinson is an award-winning and bestselling novelist, living in Texas and working in random coffee shops, cafés, and hotel lobbies worldwide. His primary work is in thrillers—including his wildly popular Dan Kotler Archaeological Thrillers. But he also successfully published science fiction, fantasy, and escapist fiction.

Kevin grew up in Wild Peach, Texas, where he was raised by his grandparents and given a healthy respect for storytelling. He often found himself in trouble in school for writing stories instead of doing his actual assignments, and he doesn't regret that in the least. And as Wild Peach was in no way metropolitan, or even approaching suburban, young Kevin had plenty of time to put his imagination to work crafting entire universes of characters, settings, and artifacts that would later inform his adult career choice.

Kevin's love for history, archeology, and science has been a tremendous source of material for his writing, feeding his fiction and giving him just the excuse he needs to read the next article, biography, or research paper, visit the next city or country, and embark on the next adventure. Kevin and his wife, Kara, can often be found traveling as van-lifers, along with their little chihuahua terrier, Mini.

I'm usually not a sci-fi fan in book form. Since sci-fi scenes can be full of gadgets or terrain or alien lifeforms, the script to set them up in a book can take some (what I consider to be) excessive verbiage. I think it is the nature of the genre. However, A Meme of War, caught my attention and held it start to finish. Being a novella, I was done in under a hour WITH distractions. It was creative and thought provoking and made me stop several times to go, "Hmmmm. ." I was expressly interested in the protocol that had been passed to each new Fleet Captain, a protocol that just blew my mind! A protocol, that, after centuries, mankind was still so afraid of a "genetic boogeyman" that it would sooner murder everyone who MIGHT have seen a "forbidden" glimpse of said boogeyman! Man had come so far and progressed, albeit on the very backs of those boogeyman, to the point of such horror and lunacy as a means of quelling their fear. I'm not sure if I am becoming a sci-fi fan just yet but time will tell.

I was very excited to see a new science fiction book by Tumlinson. I thoroughly enjoyed the "Citadel" series, and his "Sawyer Jackson" trilogy. It was definitely a pleasure to read this new short story, just as good as all his others. It did not disappoint! Science fiction or thriller, short story or complete novel, this is a terrific writer to follow. I keep an active watch for each new book by him.

A short story re-introduction to Kevin Tumlinson’s roots in Science Fiction.

This particular tale, as Kevin states, has been in his archives for quite a while. It’s great that he dusted it off and published it, even if it does not lead to a whole new series of novels.

It is indeed a well crafted little tale of plot line and character development. That makes it quite an enjoyable read.

But… one-star deduction: lots of little usage and partial words (what did he mean?) that detract from story.

Kevin Tumlinson’s novella A Meme of War is quite surprising and totally unique. The circumstances are creative and surprising. Characters are strong and well developed. Loved this story. One startling surprise after another!

5.0 out of 5 stars Space Exploration Uncovers Suprising Past

A crew of space explorers discover a stone temple in orbit around a star, but how did it get there and what is holding it in orbit? As they investigate they discover much more than they bargained for. This book ticked all the space exploration boxes for me. A strange mystery in space which is gradually uncovered, and a thought-provoking turn that made my eyes go wide. A Meme of War pays off its mysteries well. But it's not all about plot and mystery. Characters are faced with difficult decisions that could have heart-wrenching consequences.

A very enjoyable short sci-fi read. Highly recommended.
