This book was nothing short of a beautiful and tragic work of art. --Kassie, Chronicles of a Bookworm

She’s a city girl in Seattle. He’s a firefighter in a rainforest. This is never going to work…

Faith Benson isn’t your emergency contact, she’s the party-girl friend you call for a good time. The gal-pal who loves mimosas at brunch and martinis at Happy Hour. But her carefree lifestyle threatens her job at a top Seattle ad agency. There’s no one better at landing big accounts (when she shows up) but her boss demands she take a leave of absence to get her head on straight.

Faith heads to the remote Hawaiian island of Kauai, far away from the vices that get her in trouble. A twisted ankle on Day One requires rescuing by a man who is vice personified—a gorgeous firefighter who awakens feelings in her heart she never knew existed.

Asher Mackey doesn’t get involved with beautiful tourists beyond taking them to bed and then watching them leave his tiny island. He’s devoted his life to the safety and care of everyone around him…except himself. Until he meets Faith Benson, the city girl whose vibrant, inner beauty shines a light on the dark corners of his life, showing him how safe—but empty—it truly is.

Despite their best efforts to keep their distance, Faith and Asher fall hard and fast, but there’s an ocean between them. Both are building their lives on opposite sides of the Pacific while their feelings for each other grow more profound and undeniable by the day.

Something has to give.

When Asher receives devastating news, he and Faith have to decide once and for all to entrust their hearts fully to the other or return to their safe—but separate—worlds. Because neither can endure much longer, living somewhere between hello and goodbye.

Between Hello and Goodbye is a contemporary romance about love, loss, and experiencing life in all its facets. It deals with sensitive topics that may be triggering for some readers.

A beautiful story about healing
An impassioned and absorbing story about love, loss, healing and second chances. If you follow this author on social media, you already know about her personal loss and how much Hawaii has been a place of refuge/recovery for her pain. And that love of the islands is evident in this story as you have two characters searching for a restart. You may remember Faith Benson, who was Silas Marsh's fake girlfriend in Someday Someday. In this story, she's at a professional crossroads and given the amazing opportunity for a recharge in order to either move up the corporate ladder or move on elsewhere. She decides on Hawaii as her destination, traveling on her own. While she had big plays for her trip, things go sideways almost from the get-go.Asher Mackey has found his own peace on the island, but his brief encounter with Faith has him relooking at what's important to him beyond family. Is Faith just another tourist fling, or is she a game changer?I loved how the author framed this couple's romantic journey around the island. Whether it was typical tourist adventures or just simply taking in the beauty of the ocean during a beach picnic, Asher shows Faith another world beyond the big city of Seattle. I also liked how this couple's long-distance romance isn't rushed, instead exploring how they handle their time apart as well as how they manage balancing work life vs. personal time together. It isn't always pretty, but that just made it feel more real."We are stuck, aren't we? Trapped somewhere between hello and goodbye."Throughout my read, I could sense that this was likely a cathartic story for the author to write, channeling her own healing on the islands to her characters struggling with their life's direction. As always, she delivered a captivating story loaded with emotions. Another must read!

I needed a whole lot of time to contemplate the impact Emma Scott's newest standalone novel had on me before I could even attempt to write a review that would aptly put into words everything going on in my heart and head. If you're a longtime reader of Scott's, then you've probably met Faith Benson before, namely, in Someday, Someday, which just happens to be my absolute favorite among all of the books I've read penned by this author. Faith made quite an impression in that 2019 read, and Scott did write a short story about her entitled A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters in One More Step, a multi-author anthology published in 2020. While that short was sweet and sassy--just like Faith--Between Hello and Goodbye is far more than an extended version of it. It's a moving reminder that while hellos and goodbyes matter, all the more what happens in between.

While there's no denying that twenty-nine-year-old Faith Benson never fails to land the big accounts, when she's mandated by her boss to go on a two-week-long leave of absence, she realizes she needs to do some serious soul-searching. She's a city girl living in Seattle who's always up for a good time, but maybe it's time for her to woman up and decide where her life's headed. She didn't quite expect it to be the emergency room, though, but that's what happens when a mishap while exploring the small Hawaiian island of Kauai leads to a bad ankle sprain. She considers cutting her trip short, but then Asher Mackey surprises her with an offer to help her out until she's back on her feet. Considering his bedside manner left a lot to be desired when the thirty-one-year-old firefighter rescued her, she's taken aback. They both promise to keep things strictly platonic, but the connection between them can only be denied for so long. Falling for each other becomes inevitable, but can they survive the distance and devastating losses?

Where do I even begin with this novel? Emma Scott has always had a way with words, but this author also seems to have an uncanny gift to weave together stories and create characters that work their way into the hearts of countless readers. In Someday, Someday, Faith was unapologetically who she was, she's still got that brazenness to her in this new book, but she also comes to realizations once Asher becomes a part of her life. That being said, Asher made it his life's mission to care for and serve everyone, especially his younger brother, Morgan, but he seemed to forget himself in the process--until Faith came along. These two belonged together, but they also had the odds stacked against them. Their journey broke my heart at certain points, but ultimately, theirs is a story that is uplifting and soothed my soul and one that included several unforgettable supporting characters. Between Hello and Goodbye is one of 2022's must-reads and snags all the stars.

There’s trouble in paradise. Faith is on a vacation of self reflection in Kauai. She wants to learn to become independent without relying upon a man. On her first day hiking she found herself helpless requiring the assistance of a hot young firefighter.

Faith works for an ad agency in Seattle. She’s a shoe in for becoming partner at the ad agency. Before she takes on the responsibility she has some personal growth issues that need to be reevaluated. Currently Faith spends her weekend nights with one-night stands, hangovers, and late arrivals to work.

Asher has taken on the role of legal guardian for his brother Morgan since he was seventeen. Morgan has been Asher’s priority. When Morgan chose to make roots in Kauai Asher left New York to join his brother.

Asher has had a string of one-night stands never finding anyone to settle down with eventhough Morgan tries to match make him. When Asher was on duty he was the hero who swooped in to rescue Faith. It was an instant attraction with intense sexual chemistry. Asher knew she was leaving soon so starting something wasn’t realistic. The thought of not having her in his life even if for a short time had him falling for her.

Emma Scott knows her way around a good emotional romance. The sex scenes were sexy yet tasteful. The connection between Asher and Faith was open and honest. It was an instant connection with both expressing the need to get physical after days of trying to fight it. Emma Scott is a beautiful storyteller. She knows how to tap into the emotional side of her characters. It’s an art form to create emotions on paper and deliver them into gut wrenching words that evoke the feeling of sadness and love. It’s a beautiful thing.

While I adored the novella in the One More Step anthology (titled A Meet Cute and Other Natural Disasters), this full length version is so heartfelt and chock full of emotions that it should absolutely not be skipped because the former is like an appetizer and the latter is the proverbial chicken soup for the soul. This book is aptly titled since a lot of the story takes place in Kauai and the word "aloha" can mean hello or goodbye.

Faith Benson was originally introduced in Someday, Someday as the hired fiancee for Silas Marsh. She is larger than life in her free spirited exuberance and spontaneity. She works in advertising and if there's anyone who is nailing it and a shoe-in to be at the top of the industry, it's this girl. But Faith's reckless ways are catching up to her because she truly doesn't have accountability for anything seeing that she is not tethered to any particular anchor point even if the world is her oyster. She has no family support, no close friends aside from Silas, and while there's no lack of eligible suitors, she's not attached emotionally. She's been climbing the career ladder, but does she even want the responsibility and commitment that comes with partnership? Faith decides that she needs a hard reset and embarks on a trip to Kauai to do some self-reflection.

Enter Asher Mackey. On the outside, he's a very serious firefighter and this gorgeous, hot mess of a woman who has injured her ankle on the first day of her trip in Hawaii has him reluctant to do more than what his job requires. But something about her speaks to him, especially in her desire to be a better version of herself and having already epically failed if she has to give up so soon and go home. And since Faith is on a temporary man deprivation diet, they can only be friends at best.

Between Faith's infectious personality where she injects so much warmth and humor with a side of sex appeal, each interaction only lures Asher in further. To top it off, there's a part of Asher's past that completely understands and resonates with Faith. What develops between them is something you have to experience yourself between the pages because it is special, unique and beyond satisfying. However, the relationship is not without obstacles, both personal and geographical, so will the next time they see each other be hello or goodbye?

If you've been following Emma Scott at all, there are many aspects of her personal life infused into this story. It’s a full labor of love in words and passion that resonates deep to the bones in a way that only she can deliver. Any kind of unconditional love brings the risk of loss when tragedy strikes. I felt the ravaging pain and emptiness that comes with devastation on these characters' behalves and how the why's will never be adequately answered. The process of forgiveness and moving on doesn't mean forgetting, but healing towards peace and living with the best memories and reminders of the vivid colors those loved ones brought to existence. Faith and Asher are relationship goals once the dust settles seeing how they are each other's North Star. I'm overjoyed that Emma chose to bring this story so close to her heart and share it with her reader audience because it's impossible not to fall in love with every word and character.

What a beautiful, yet traumatic story that envelops you in a family and in one of the small islands near Hawaii.
Faith works in Seattle in advertising and is a party girl who lives for the good times and when she is offered a promotion to travel to the islands near Hawaii to get herself together before deciding on the future pathway of her career.
On her first day she meets fireman Asher who rescues her and he finds himself helping and spending lots of time with her after they feel a connection with each other.
Torn between a small, quiet island and Seattle both Faith and Asher finds themselves "between hello and goodbye" as they both want their lives where they live.
A tragedy brings things to a head and Asher who has always cared for people starts to push Faith away. As he slowly deals with what has happened she brings him back to the world and she understands only too clearly where her home is.
Wonderful writing made this a heartbreaking, warming and fabulous read.
    Would highly recommend it.

I thought this was going to be a light and fun read but boy was I wrong. This book was a whirlwind of emotions and to know that this book was born from such a personal and unimaginable loss, I can't even fathom to describe what I felt after reading author's note so no review can do this book justice but I tried.

I felt connected to these characters, their happiness was mine, and their sorrows became mine, in short, whatever they were feeling I was feeling those emotions with them.

Asher and Faith's life struggles were so real, they wanted their relationship to work and tried to do the same but they knew that one of them would've to give up his/her life for that because Faith lives and thrives in the city and Asher found his peace in Kauai, a little piece of Hawaii.

They met when Faith went to find solace in a beautiful part of Hawaii. She wanted to stop her life of meaningless hookups and stop needing help from men but she stumbled upon one on the first day of her trip. She was such a fun character and Asher tried to stay away from her but couldn't.

They both felt this connection with each other from the very beginning and they fell in love in no time and I loved every second of it.
