Queen Charlotte: Before Bridgerton Came an Epic Love Story Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,710 ratings

Go beyond the original Shondaland series on Netflix, Queen Charlotte, with this lushly romantic Bridgerton prequel novel written by New York Times bestselling authors Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes as the marriage of Queen Charlotte and King George of England leads to an unexpected love story and a union that transforms society.

In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.

Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she, and her King, needed.

Because George has secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.

Thrust into her new role, Charlotte must navigate the intricate politics of the court—with the newly-titled Lady Danbury at her side—all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King…even as he pushes her away. Now, Charlotte must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society, fulfilling her destiny as Queen. But she also has to fight for the love growing between her and George as people first, royals second. As she says to him: “Fight with me! Fight for me!”

Delivered with tear in cover 😔
I loved the series so I’m so excited to read this book. I’d been anticipating the delivery of this book all day today just for it to have a tear in the cover. I absolutely LOVE hardcovers and take pride in the appearance of my books so this was very disappointing 😔

I will begin by saying that I have not watched the Netflix series because I won’t pay for a streaming service. (Yes, I’m cheap.) But I will admit that I am a long-time fan of Julia Quinn, having read almost everything she’s written. Thus, I expected a wonderful story in Queen Charlotte. I wasn’t prepared for it to be a great story.

When Charlotte arrives in England, she is almost ready to run away from the impending marriage to the king. And she does just that. She flees out of the cathedral and into a garden where she tries to climb a wall. Sadly she can’t do it. But an ally appears: a tender young man who talks of stars and planets and farming. They bond in a unique way until she learns that he is the king, her intended, who feels the same way about the marriage as she does. For that moment they become Just George and Just Charlotte. It is this moment when the reader is given a glimpse of the true person behind the royal persona. They marry, but their union is fraught with problems. Their story is tender and passionate at the same time; in essence, a coming-of-age story for Charlotte who must grow up in a hurry when faced with her husband’s secret of mental illness. In quiet moments her love for George grows until, with her support, he faces down those who would manage him and takes control of his own life.

The story is full of detailed descriptions of medical ‘treatments’ that are barbaric but were quite commonplace when treating illnesses of the mind during that era. They are not for the faint of heart.
I enjoyed Lady Danbury, Charlotte’s Lady-In-Waiting, chosen not because of her title or her husband’s support of the royal family, but because of the color of her skin – the Queen Mother wanting dark-skinned Charlotte to have someone of ‘her own kind’ near her. Through Lady Danbury we are exposed to the rampant racism running through the courts and beyond.

Cleverly written, I now feel no need to watch the series.

This was a clever way to write an alternative history novel without making it do feel as such, and it added more layers and background to the adaptation of the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn. Julia Quinn obviously worked on this prequel novel. Otherwise, if would not have had the sexy romantic magic of her novels. But this was also a collaborate effort that was done as an effort to make sense of the alternative history shown in the Netflix series. Hence, why it is all so familiar, historically speaking (dates, names, places, etc) but also not. As a historical novel true to the real people loosely portrayed in this novel, I would not recommend it. But as an entertaining, heartfelt romance that expands on the Netflix series, I definitely do.

Dearest Gentle Readers,

Do NOT miss out on the love story of the beloved Queen Charlotte and King George III. It is enchanting, heartbreaking, and eye-opening.

I was hooked from the very beginning. We finally get to know the love story that started it all, when the Queen was Just Charlotte and not the dominating force behind the Marriage Mart and the ton.

We get the scoop on Lady Danbury too, which I found very enjoyable. Who knew she wasn’t always such a curmudgeon?!?

This is one of my favorite Bridgeton books. It can definitely be read as a stand-alone or a prequel if you haven’t read the main series.

All My Best,
Jess

Bridgerton fan from Netflix here. By far, Queen Charlotte & King George’s story is my absolute favorite! Their love story had me crying! Bought the book because I loved the series on Netflix. Must mention that I have not read any of the other Bridgerton books, so this was my first one. Juila Quinn and Shonda Rhimes did a fantastic job with QC in the book + the tv show. I like how the book was outlined, as it was actually well written and easier to understand more of each character’s story.

However, the book did not rotate between past and present time like how the show had. The book fasts forward at the very end when QC visits KG and tells him the “good news.” The tv show is notorious for all of the steamy scenes, but I honestly appreciate that the book was not so x-rated and moreso an actual softer romance. Although, the book can be much like re-reading the very same lines from the show, so if you had watch it before reading the book, it can be repetitive and pointless. There are some details that I do think is worth reading that the show did not include and some scenes were definitely not the same as the book. Overall, I love both the book and tv series. Might even say I love the book more. Willing to read/watch another book/season if they choose to continue Queen Charlotte!

While the book's diolague follows much of that is the show, it still carries a very important ingredient: an omniscient point of view.
It allows the reader to understand certain actions or simple gestures made that many only speculate if they have yet to read the book.
And it is not ENTIRELY the same as the show has some diolague delivered differently in the book.
I will say that I was NOT happy that a few characters were omitted in the book, thus omitting a subplot we witness in the show, but it doesn't change the heart of the main plot and its characters, King George III and Queen Charlotte.
And I am especially happy that the book does include our favorite closing scene, even though the show gives more elaborate reason for the ending. The book focuses not on the news of securing an heir, but to further cement their memory, their story of a great love, despite all odds.

This book is so beautifully written, I really enjoyed reading it. What an amazing story between queen Charlotte and king George, they showed us that real love truly makes miracles. I especially ADORED the character of Lady Danbury, we get to see how much she contributed to the positive changes that happened during those times. She truly is a huge important part of this story.
