A Botanist's Guide to Flowers and Fatality (Saffron Everleigh Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 437 ratings

Brilliant botanist Saffron Everleigh is back and ready for adventure in Kate Khavari’s next mesmerizing historical mystery.

“A cleverly plotted puzzle” (Ashley Weaver) in the vein of
Opium and Absinthe, this second installment is perfect for fans of Rhys Bowen and Sujata Massey.

1920s London isn’t the ideal place for a brilliant woman with lofty ambitions. But research assistant Saffron Everleigh is determined to beat the odds in a male-dominated field at the University College of London. Saffron embarks on her first research study alongside the insufferably charming Dr. Michael Lee, traveling the countryside with him in response to reports of poisonings. But when Detective Inspector Green is given a case with a set of unusual clues, he asks for Saffron’s assistance.

The victims, all women, received bouquets filled with poisonous flowers. Digging deeper, Saffron discovers that the bouquets may be more than just unpleasant flowers— there may be a hidden message within them, revealed through the use of the old Victorian practice of floriography. A dire message, indeed, as each woman who received the flowers has turned up dead.

Alongside Dr. Lee and her best friend, Elizabeth, Saffron trails a group of suspects through a dark jazz club, a lavish country estate, and a glittering theatre, delving deeper into a part of society she thought she’d left behind forever.

Will Saffron be able to catch the killer before they send their next bouquet, or will she find herself with fatal flowers of her own in Kate Khavari’s second intoxicating installment.

Engaging mystery

Engaging mystery
A Botanist’s Guide to Flowers and Fatality was just as engaging as the first Saffron Everleigh Mystery book in my opinion. I enjoyed the addition of Dr. Michael Lee to the mix. He brought a charming balance to Saffron’s quirky nature. They also helped better each other in their scientific work. I also enjoyed how Lee took Saffron into account to assist without stepping over her. This was best shown when Saffron was requested to refresh tee for a colleague. Lee took over the situation to prevent Saffron from having to serve her male colleagues in such a way that it didn’t undermine her/make it appear that she needed a man’s help. The other aspect of this book that I particularly enjoyed was the floriography. I really enjoyed learning what the different flowers meant as a message and watching Saffron put those pieces of the mystery together. I also felt like the overall mystery was better executed this time around too. I was shocked by who the culprit was revealed to be. I also read this book via audiobook and felt that Jodie Harris once again did a great job with the narration. I would recommend checking out this audiobook.

A Botanist's Guide To Flowers And Fatality is the second book of this series that features Saffron Everleigh, a graduate student in a London University in the 1920's, who has the potential to become an outstanding botanical scientists. Being a women in a male dominated academic world presents Saffron with challenges. But, she uses these challanges to demonstrate how extraordinary is her grasp of scientific knowledge, and how skillfully she can dispatch complex problems. She has a flair for interjecting herself into situations that sometimes do not endear her with her professional colleagues......or, her romantic interests....and certainly not with perpetrators. There is much in the story that relates to plants....all aspects of plants (poisons, folklore, decorative use, medicinal value, and more). And, the material presented is accurate (scientifically and historically). People with an interest in plants will very likely enjoy this book. The writing is very well done with much interesting detail provided in descriptions of people, places, and things, and actions. I really enjoyed the author's insight into the characters and the historic period where the story unfolds. Perhaps, there were a bit more facets to the story than "necessary", but who's to say. I look forward to reading more adventures of Saffron....it will be interesting to see her mature somewhat, and to see how experience steadies her investigative approach.
I recommend this book without reservation.

Loved the first book, definitely had to get the second. I wish Saffron wasn’t so crabby all the time, Lee is just trying to be nice. Will continue with future books, just hope she lightens up a bit.

I was torn with this review... If I were a paid reviewer, I'd probably write this very differently, but I’m not, so I’m going to focus more on the positives and here's what I've got for now:

I liked the first book enough to request the second, and I will definitely continue with at least one more book in the series. The story is amusing and mostly entertaining, and I like most of the characters. The problem is that they are losing their uniqueness. If you don't analyze the heck out of it, you'll enjoy the book. I will include it in my classroom library and recommend it to the right students because there is the potential of a strong, smart female protagonist who is interested in science and goes against her social class and expected roles for women of her generation. All wonderful examples for my high school students.

For better or worse, this novel is more about relationships and people than it is about plot and mystery-solving. Yes, there is a plot, and the secret messages sent via flower really intrigued me and made me want to learn more about this Victorian tradition. But, there’s not a lot of new and original ideas. Yes, Saffron is “solving her mystery” but it seems to be done by flirting with Dr. Lee and going to parties. You don’t really see any of her intellect or academic prowess. In fact, her job seems to consist of a place she goes to write notes about her investigations – and that’s it.

This installment of the series has basically stripped her of what made the character unique in the first story. She’s just another pretty, rich girl talking about trying to prove her independence and fight against the expectations of her family. Disappointing, because she was what made the first one so good. But, again, the story is fine – it’s just another Sherlock Holmes knockoff with a female lead. I wanted more of her roommate Elizabeth, to be honest.

As for the love triangle – I could take it or leave it. Again, in this book which revolves more around relationships than intrigue, it is fine.

I don’t know. The audiobook was a fine distraction while commuting to work. It didn’t take up a lot of bandwidth in my brain, so I didn’t have to focus too hard – I like that sometimes. Not everything has to be a challenge or an intellectual pursuit. That said, I was excited to see Saffron grow – and if anything she regressed, so it was a bit disappointing.

As in the first book of The Botanist's Guide series, this story grabs your attention right from the start and takes you through a great mystery starring a brilliant female botanist just after WWI. The writing is intelligent and fast paced and mixes in just enough romance to keep it interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I loved the first book so much, I preordered this one.

It’s devilishly clever. And Lee is quite rakishly handsome. Saffron is sought out more than once. The clues are there, but there are still surprises.

Yes! I loved it and can’t wait for the next!

This historical cozy mystery is well crafted. The conclusion was unexpected, and I appreciated the botanical details and descriptions. It can be read as a standalone. Although I haven't read the first book, I intend to.
