Is it the end of the world?
What a great mystery. The family is moving to a house in the country, but suddenly Bo, who is 10-year-old Drake’s German Shepherd runs off into the forest and doesn’t come back. Before they know it, the world is going crazy, and Dad is taking the family away to a place near a creek to camp, where he’s heard of a crazy Indian curse that keeps animals away. There they stay as they try to decide what is going on in the world. All the time, the mom is believing it is the end of the world and is constantly in prayer. As they hide and wait to understand what is happening – it appears the dogs have turned against the humans throughout the world and have brought a virus that is killing everyone. Soon they are finding dogs, coyotes, and wolves ganging up against them. Luckily, they are armed and are able to fight off the animals when they venture out of their protected area to replenish their supplies. Follow the family through their trials as it appears the end is coming. Discover why the place they are staying is able to protect them and discover how they are able to survive in this end-times mystery.

"Something Unnatural: A Novella" by Joshua Scribner is a well-written horror apocalyptic story. Scribner takes you on a journey with Drake and his family as they navigate mysteries and adventures in an upside-down world. If you enjoy dystopian, this is a nice short read!

Something Unnatural: A Novella is a quick novella following a family as they luckily move to the countryside right before the world goes upside down. The plot was pretty good and the story read smoothly from one chapter to the next leaving the reader in anticipation of what would happen next. I think the author borrows from movies or is maybe just inspired by them, but this one had a war of worlds type ending which was nicely done. I thought all the characters were fun, the dad especially. The mom was probably my least favorite, but Joshua did alright with her. In short, a quick novella, great story, moved quick with excellent pacing, a definite pickup if you like Scribner's work.

I like stories set at the very beginning of a dystopia, and this one presents it in an interesting way through the eyes of a 10-year-old boy and his family. While it raises some questions about how this 'unnatural' development caused such devastation in such a short time, it is an interesting premise with 'A Quiet Place' vibes. This, like Scribner's 'Falling From The Sky', presents logical and believable humans reacting to the situation and has a nice focus on the family dynamic and its relatable characters.

"Something Unnatural" by Joshua Scribner is a novella written from the viewpoint of 10-year-old protagonist Drake, who, with his family moves out into the country only to discover mysteries, suspense, and adventure in an end of the world scenario. The premisis of the story is interesting, but the writing and logic is a bit simplistic. I think that younger readers would find this an interesting read.

Something Unnatural by Joshua Scribner is a nice little creepy novella that reminded me of a Stephen King story. It is a well-put-together apocalyptic tale with good character development and an engaging plot. Well done!

I liked how readable this was. It was engaging and had a few surprises that I didn't expect in the plot! I also liked how the author helped create a feeling of lost in time in the plot! Great quick read!

"Something Unnatural" is a gripping novella that masterfully blends science fiction with a deep, introspective look at what it means to be human. The story draws you in with its richly imagined world and complex characters who challenge the boundaries between natural and artificial life. The author crafts a narrative that is not only thought-provoking but also filled with suspense and unexpected twists. It's a fantastic read for anyone who loves sci-fi that questions our future and the ethics of humanity's technological ambitions. Highly recommend this engaging and quick-paced journey!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but perfectly formed

This is a decent-length novella that was easily readable in one session. But it contains a complete story, taking place in a well-constructed world with a believable creepy atmosphere. This is a unique variation on the "zombie apocalypse" theme, with the major twist that the primary zombies aren't human. I won't spoil the ending, but the author didn't go for a "supernatural woo" explanation as they easily could have done. Instead they tied the ending neatly together in a way that made sense emotionally and intellectually.

I'm not sure if they're' planning a second book in the series - things were definitely left open for that possibility., I'd like to find out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling horror

I really enjoyed my time with this short novella by Joshua Scribner. Having read some of his work before, the first thing I noticed was that his writing style has been honed and practiced, with a definite enhancement on tone, atmosphere and sentence structure in this latest release. This made for a compelling read by a talented storyteller.

The book is pitched at a mid grade level with a young main character and his family who find themselves in a troubling situation. This setup reminded me a lot of the Goosebumps books I used to read as a child, as they had a similar feel in content, somehow spooky but not scary for a young audience, although this book is far darker than it's predecessor. I liked the main character of Drake and his family dynamic with Trey, and also his love of animals felt genuine, so much so you can see the conflict within him when the dogs turn on humanity.

This short book is filled with horror elements that really kept me reading. The setup was great and the ending strong, and I could have easily read a whole book within this storyline.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome short story!

This was really good for a short story; it was a page turner. "Something Unnatural: A Novella" grabs your attention from the start and doesn't let go. Ten-year-old Drake's excitement about moving to the countryside quickly turns to concern when his beloved dog, Bo, mysteriously runs off and refuses to return home. Little does Drake know that Bo's odd behavior is just the tip of the iceberg.
In a chilling twist, humanity finds itself under relentless attack, and the situation grows increasingly dire. Drake and his family are left with no choice but to hide and cling to hope in the face of overwhelming odds. The author skillfully weaves a tale of suspense and survival, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
While the story is a novella, it manages to pack a punch, delivering a concise and engrossing narrative that leaves you wanting more. The pacing is tight, creating a sense of urgency that propels the story forward. You'll find yourself deeply invested in Drake's journey, rooting for him and his family as they navigate the unforgiving circumstances.
"Something Unnatural" is a gripping and fast-paced read, perfect for those craving a quick but satisfying thrill. The author's ability to capture the tension and despair of a world under siege is commendable. Although it leaves you wanting further exploration of the intriguing premise, the novella's brevity doesn't diminish its impact. If you're seeking a compact yet enthralling experience that will keep you engaged until the very end, this novella is a must-read.

Absolutely flew through this as the book flows really nicely. I enjoyed the storyline and characters, which i feel was in part to there not being that many of them. Gives you a chance to get the know them more. I feel as though I was desperate for a big twist, but nevertheless the last two chapters were still enjoyable. Almost feels like it needs a sequel, which I hope there is
