The Hanging City Kindle Edition
For a young woman who wields the power of fear, humanity’s greatest enemy is her only hope in a new romantic, adventure-filled fantasy by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.
Seven years on the run from her abusive father, and with no hope of sanctuary among the dwindling pockets of human civilization, Lark is out of options. Her only leverage is a cursed power: she can thrust fear onto others, leaving all threats fleeing in terror. It’s a means of survival as she searches for a place to call home. If the campfire myths of her childhood are true, Lark’s sole chance for refuge could lie in Cagmar, the city of trolls—a brutal species and the sworn enemies of humanity.
Valuing combat prowess, the troll high council is intrigued. Lark could be much more useful than the low-caste humans who merely labor in Cagmar. Her gift makes her invaluable as a monster slayer to fight off the unspeakable creatures that torment the trolls’ hanging city, suspended from a bridge over an endless dark canyon.
Lark will do anything to make Cagmar her home, but her new role comes with a caveat: use her power against a troll, and she’ll be killed. Her loyalty is quickly put to the test when she draws the hatred of a powerful troll who loathes humankind. Still, she finds unexpected friendship in the city and, even more surprisingly, love. But if everything else doesn’t undo her, being caught in the arms of a troll surely will. Now in the fight of her life, Lark has a lot to learn—about her past, about trust and hope when all seems lost, and above all, about the extraordinary power of fear itself.

Praise for The Hanging City
“Holmberg does a fantastic job of humanizing her nonhuman characters…This twisty adventure will have fantasy readers hooked.” —Publishers Weekly
“Holmberg’s worldbuilding is detailed and dystopian but still possesses the same enchantment as tales told once upon a time. For fans of T. Kingfisher, this sweet story of belonging is a romantic twist on the classic bridge-troll fairy tale.” —Library Journal
“A tale of love, belonging, and embracing one’s fears, Holmberg leaves readers asking who the real monsters actually are in a tale full of creative world building.” —Booklist
“Lyrical and striking, The Hanging City is an enchanting story of romance within a harsh world and an even more unforgiving society. Navigating class conflict, rigid social rules, and bitter hierarchies, The Hanging City explores the many types of love that people can find between one another, and is as unsparing in its depiction of the consequences of love as it is thrilling, rewarding, and heart-felt.” —Robert Jackson Bennett, author of Foundryside and City of Stairs
“Holmberg’s latest is rife with forbidden romance, monsters, and unique world building. Not only will readers enjoy delving deep into the canyons the trolls call their home, but Lark’s journey will also leave a mark deep on their hearts.” —Tricia Levenseller, New York Times bestselling author of Blade of Secrets

The human woman Lark is on the run. Cast out and reviled by her own kind because of the terrifying abilities she exhibits, she is desperately seeking somewhere to belong. Her last hope is with the trolls—the sworn enemies of humans—a powerful warrior species she’s hoping will see the use in a woman who can wield fear itself. Unexpectedly, she finds more than a home when she falls for a troll who doesn’t scare so easily.
It’s surprisingly simple to understand why Lark swoons over this particular troll, even with his green-tinted skin, massive size, and tusks. That doesn’t mean their path is simple. Despite Lark’s usefulness, trolls don’t trust humans, and forbid cross-species relationships. And Lark’s despot father isn’t willing to let her go so easily. He’s planning all-out war, with Lark caught in the middle. But like the best fairy tales, this book is just as much about the fantastical journey as it is about the happily-ever-after.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2023Charlie N. Holmberg’s novels are something rare in the fiction lover’s world: reliable. When a new novel is published, a reader can buy it and dive in, knowing it will provoke, interest, and satisfy. The Hanging City is well worth reading. It is suspenseful, and even while reading the last few pages, the reader has no idea how the tension will resolve, but resolve it does, in a sudden yet redemptive manner.
The Hanging City pits two civilizations against each other: the humans, who live as tribe-like small settlements scattered across the desolate landscape, and the trolli, a larger, more cohesive and resourceful group of beings who built a hanging city beneath the ruins of what was human metropolis in a time long ago, before catastrophic drought devastated the world, making most of the land a barren, dry, dusty wasteland. The rise of the trolli’s prosperity followed the drought-caused descent of humankind, and, at the time of the novel’s narrative action, the two groups harbor a deeply held antipathy and distrust of the other.
The novel’s heroine, Lark, is a human girl who has been on her own, moving from one settlement to the next, running from her cruel, abusive father. Lark has a mysterious psychic ability that her father wants to claim and manipulate for his own advancement and gain. Lark makes her way to the hanging city of the trolli, where she (as a human) is rated lowest of the low, not even eligible to join the caste system by which trolli society is organized. She is not welcomed into the city with open arms, but she hopes to be tolerated and to prove her worth to the council, the trolli administration.
Lark, though having no status, still longs for a place to belong, for a family that she can love, and for a group of people who can accept her psychic gift. She begins to be familiar with some of the humans living in the trolli city, and forges fledgling friendships with some of them, including a young man who is a half-breed human/trolli mix.
As time passes, Lark hopes a few of the more tolerant trolli might fit into her long-dreamt-of idea of having a community, the “family” she desires. She even begins to have deeper feelings for one male trolli, seeing beauty in his green skin and bony skin protrusions, and, feeling safe in his company, she dares to let down her guard.
Perils arise, misunderstandings occur, and Lark’s past catches up with her, but when the story’s ending comes, Lark’s future looks as though it could be better than her dreams might have promised. We root for her along the way, and Lark’s dream becomes the reader’s, too.
It takes real talent to create fiction in which the reader becomes so involved that he or she viscerally feels every blow, experiences every joy, and hopes so hard for a satisfying conclusion to the story that tears and laughter bubble up in turn. Charlie N. Holmberg has written such a book, again, and I thank her.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2025Very interesting story. Looking for a place to belong and finding love. Not quite the ending I was looking for but it did end on a good note.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2023What can I say? Charlie N. Holmberg does it again.
The world building, the loveable characters, the haunting villains.
She writes love so well. She writes struggle and triumph so well. Trust and betrayal, danger and safety, the complex emotions that any creature with a soul is bound to have, human or not.
Book after book the readers sink into a new world that was masterfully and ingeniously written for them.
This book is no different. It pulled me in from the start, got me intrigued to find out more about this new world, let me get to know the characters page by page, and I could not put it down for a second.
Holmberg's stories are at times unpredictable. You're not always sure where the plot is heading, what's gonna happen and how it's going to conclude. But as always, by the time you reach the ending you are guaranteed a sense of fulfilment and joy (not always for a happy ending, but just for the enjoyment of a story well written and well ended).
I hope she never stops writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2023I’ve been branching off from my normal reading material to try and find something more entertaining to read. While I was originally interested in the book, the further along I got I started getting bored. I liked the characters well enough, but got tired of Lark’s internal dialogue. Also, the characters just felt flat. None of the really seemed real and 3 dimensional to me.
I did read a lot of the reviews who complained about the ending so I skipped to the end and it truly was a remarkably lacking ending. **spoiler** “She felt a rain drop on her cheek.” The end. The book felt unfinished.
No resolution as to where they actually ended up, were they accepted, were they happy? I guess we are meant to imagine our own ending but since I paid for the book, I would really appreciate it if the author would do it herself.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2024Great story with characters crafted so well that I was left wanting more about. You know it is great writing and attention to secondary characters when you wish the story could shift perspective and have some of it told from their eyes. I wanted to know more about each of them. The love story was predictable and sweet. Did not descend too far into the romance novel 'heaving breast and turgid member' territory, which was a welcome relief from other novels I have tried to read. On a side note: There might be just a little too much suspension of belief to consider the physical viability of a human carrying a baby that neseccarily will be twice the size of the mother.
My only disappointment is to be left wanting the story to continue and nothing about a second book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2023I was sceptical about a love story between a toll and a human, and I wanted to see how it could be done. Bravo, to the author, who had me rooting for this couple all the way through. There were plenty of colorful characters to meet, all believably written. This is a massive world I'd like more of, and the story is a good one, from start to finish. It gripped me.
Ok, now for the cons. A pet peeve of mine is first person, and I usually put those back on the shelf. I felt my curiosity was worth the aggravation - and I'm glad I read this. However.. I've read fanfiction that was written better. How it was written, not the story or first person. I just don't think this is quite ready for publishing. A new set of critical eyes with a red pen would do wonders. The ending.. I kept scrolling to try and find another sliver after The End.. It feels rushed, unfinished.. well, that's the authors choice, but I'm disappointed and unsatisfied. One more section of that last chapter could change the disappointment into those good warm fuzzies you get when closing a good book.
TLDR: Worth reading, but I probably won't reread.

5.0 out of 5 stars So unexpectedly beautiful.
When a fantasy can seep into your real life and allow you the space to reflect on experiences that were once debilitating, consequently finding power within the hurt - That's a novel I'll cherish.
I chose this as my Amazon First read for the month (after just finding out about first reads yesterday, and choosing this book as my litteral first read). Needless to say, my expectations were exceeded far beyond anything thought possible. How could a book about humans, trolls and romance be so enthralling? I'm unsure, but Charlie developed the most vivid picture of how one can take past trauma and use it as a lifeforce to push forward and rise above the hurt. Every moment had me holding on for more, I never thought I'd finish a fantasy in one sitting; but I couldn't stop.
I am so beyond greatful to have stumbled upon this novel and I now can't wait to search for more of the author's works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant creation of a world and gifted story telling
I love Charlie Holmberg books but this one is especially well written and is a really well told love story. Her characters are so well drawn that you understand them even if you don't like some. It really makes you feel for the two beings who love each other despite the very big differences between their species and cultures. I haven't read such a good book in ages (and I read a lot!). Please can we have the next instalment- cant wait to see their next chapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars I bought this as a joke, but....
It sounded so ridiculous I was intending to read it in the same mindset the guys from Mystery Science Theatre watch old B films. However, I got got. I think it sums it up to say I was very sad when I read after that it is intended to be a standalone. I wish it was a little more in-depth with the world building at points, but the main characters drove the story well enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beauty and the?
An interesting premise, a story well written, the outcome, good or bad, left to the final few pages. Unfortunately not a story for me, hence only four stars not five.
