The Graham Effect (Campus Diaries Book 1) Kindle Edition
The first book in the delicious, icy-hot Campus Diaries series, a spinoff of BookTok sensations Off-Campus and Briar U, by New York Times bestselling author Elle Kennedy.
Gigi Graham has exactly three goals: qualify for the women’s national hockey team, win Olympic gold, and step out of her famous father’s shadow. So far, so good, except for two little things. Fine–a little thing and a big, grumpy thing. She needs to improve her game behind the net, and she needs help from Luke Ryder.
Ryder is six-foot five, built, opinionated, rude…and sexy as hell. But he’s still the enemy.
Briar’s new hockey co-captain has his reasons, though. The men’s team just merged with a rival program, leaving Ryder with an angry roster where everyone hates one another’s guts. To make matters worse, the summer coaching spot he’s angling for with the legendary Garrett Graham is out of reach after he makes the worst possible first impression on his hero. So, really, this compromise with Gigi is win-win. He helps her make the national team, she puts in a good word
with her dad.
The only potential snag? This bone-deep, body-numbing, mind-spinning chemistry they’re trying to ignore. It’s a dangerous game they’re playing, but the risks just might be worth it.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2023OMG, I loved this book! Anyone that knows me knows that Elle Kennedy and her Briar world hockey series is probably the only sports romance series that I am consumed by. I legit squealed like a little girl when I heard she was writing a new generation featuring the children of the previous Off Campus couples. This first book focuses on Gigi, who is Garrett and Hannah’s daughter. Gigi and Ryder’s funny, sweet and sexy enemies to lovers/friends with benefits romance is full of banter and chemistry, and completely captured my heart. I loved their story so so much!
Gigi and Ryder first meet as teens at a hockey camp, and it’s immediately hate at first sight. Six years later, they are both at the same college and both in the women’s and men’s hockey teams respectively. Gigi has one main goal: to make the women’s Olympic hockey team. To do this however, she needs to improve her game and has no option but to seek out support from Ryder. Luke is the co-caption of the men’s team, and has already made a bad impression on Gigi’s father. So in turn for helping Gigi, Luke wants her to put in a good word with Garrett, so he can get the summer coaching spot he has been aiming for. A win-win for both of them until neither can avoid the inevitable chemistry, which leads to a friends with benefits situation, and eventually becomes a forbidden relationship. With this book, Elle Kennedy delivered all of my favorite things about romance. It was smart and snappy, but also littered with these romantic scenes that sometimes took my breath away. It was funny and adorable, but smoldering with heat in every exchange. It was perfectly balanced and I had so much fun reading it!
I loved this book so hard. I laughed and swooned so many times, and I loved every moment of Gigi and Ryder’s story. I will never not feel comforted by Elle Kennedy’s writing and the familiarity that her characters and even just their world brings. The Briar world is the gift that keeps on giving and I will throw myself at every single new release as long as Elle keeps writing them. Reading this book was like being reunited with old friends and falling in love with new ones, and I seriously can't wait for more from this series in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2024The Graham Effect is a fun and engaging book that combines sports, romance, and personal growth. The story follows Gigi Graham, who wants to make the women's national hockey team and move out of her famous father's shadow, and Ryder, the rugged co-captain of the men's hockey team. Their journey is full of hard work, challenges, and unexpected love.
One of the book's best parts is the relationship between Gigi and Ryder. They start as enemies, but their funny arguments soon turn into something more. Ryder is tough on the outside but has much depth, which makes him a great character.
The book also does an excellent job of showing themes like self-discovery and redemption. As Gigi works towards her goals and navigates her feelings, the story shows the ups and downs of love and competition in a real and relatable way.
Sometimes, the story moves a bit slowly, but the interesting characters and engaging plot make up for it.
Overall, I like the book as it excitingly explores personal growth and romance. It's a great read for anyone who loves sports, romance, and character-driven stories.

Chewed this up, and I'm about to bite into The Dixon Rule as soon as I finish writing this review. I read my first Elle Kennedy book about 2 months ago - The Chase (Briar U). I wasn't all that impressed. I thought it was cute and well written with some great laughs. On a book buying binge, I picked up The Dixon Rule... love me a purple cover, 💁♀️. Anyhoo, I realized upon reading reviews that this series contained characters from Briar U. So, even though I wasn't overly impressed with The Chase, I decided I'd go back and finish the Briar U series before hopping into Campus Diaries. I read the rest of Briar U over the span of the past week - within about 4 to 5 days. During that time I ordered this book, The Graham Effect, thinking I should probably read that one first as well. I made good choices.
I freaking loved this book. I'm totally an Elle Kennedy fan now. While some of these books are definitely more engaging than others, they all are highly entertaining. The Risk is my favorite, so far, that I've read. However, I'm thinking this book is a close 2nd, but it's tied in my mind right now with The Dare. I think plot wise, I like The Graham Effect a smidge more. Then again, I really like the curvy girl aspect of The Dare. I'm teetering back and forth.
Of all Elle Kennedy mmc's (that I've read so far), Luke Ryder is my favorite, only slightly above Conor Edwards. Ryder has a more compelling backstory. My heartstrings were absolutely tugged on. He really was an emotionally stunted mmc who had the broody thing going on. Loved every second of his fall. I really felt he and Gigi were meant for each other, complimented each other, and deserved each other. It was exciting to turn the page to see what was going to happen next with those two.
A few days ago, I ordered the entire Off Campus series. I've had such a good time this past week blowing through Briar U and starting Campus Diaries that I MUST go back to the beginning. If I had known how much I was going to enjoy Elle Kennedy's book, and her writing style, I'd have started with the Off Campus series. I like to read series- spinoff series in order. Failure this time around. No matter, I can't imagine reading this world out of order is going to stunt my enjoyment. I would just caution anyone contemplating beginning this journey to do it right and start from the top, work your way down. Off Campus, Briar U, and then Campus Diaries.
The Graham Effect is a fun, slightly emotional, fast-paced read - guaranteed good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved everything about Thai book! Gigi and Ryder are amazing
Hands-down this is my favourite Elle Kennedy book I have read! To say I couldn’t put this down is an understatement. I haven’t stayed up as late reading as I did with this book in a very long time.
I was instantly hooked and connected to both Gigi and Ryder from the prologue. I smiled and laughed so much while reading. The found family vibes between all the friends was amazing, it was such an wonderful collection of characters. Although the guys started out rough after Briar and Eastwood merged colleges, and men’s hockey teams, this really added to the character arc of Ryder in a beautiful way.
Honestly, I have nothing bad to say about this story, Gigi or Ryder; I loved it all. The progression of their friendship and relationship was organic, addictive and beyond sweet. Let’s not forget the delicious tension and playful banter between these two. They did not lack in the spicy department and their chemistry was off the charts, and they had no problem showing that with one another.
Gigi is hilarious, I enjoyed her inner thoughts so much. She is strong, fun, hardworking and determined. Ryder is quiet, stern, comes across his grumpy and closed off man is he so much more than meets the eye. What they both brought out of each other was real and the connection showed was easy to feel-there was support, care, understanding and no judgment ever, they truly made each other and their lives better. Not just with their respective hockey careers, but finding someone to trust with all the things they kept locked inside.
There was even a couple fun twists in this read and I loved every second of it!
It was so great getting to see a few of the ‘Off-Campus’ characters, especially Garrett and Hannah. The introduction of new characters leading into the next book, I am beyond excited to continue this series.

Going back to the Off-Campus world is amazing. In this story, besides getting to know new lovely characters, we get to see the one we all love so much.
Gigi and Ryder are two characters who grab your attention right from the start, and I loved how they met. Gigi reminded me a lot of Garrett, and I have to say I saw a bit of Hannah in Ryder. Despite comparing the characters in some aspects, they have their own story, and I loved every moment.
Gigi and Ryder have undeniable chemistry, and one of the things I loved the most was how honest and communicative they are. Ryder starts off as that grumpy guy who hardly speaks, but as he gets involved with Gigi, he starts to open up, and it's heartwarming to watch. They come from very different worlds, but I think they end up complementing each other.
And I have to say, Garrett Daddy is *chef's kiss*. Seeing Gigi with the uncles is hilarious.
Just like in the Off-Campus series, the secondary characters are wonderful, and I can't wait to see more of them. Beckett reminded me so much of Dean.
This book is the sequel I didn't know I needed. I couldn't put it down and finished it in a few hours. Elle Kennedy nailed it again; "The Graham Effect" has the perfect mix of laughter, cameos of the other Briar couples, sweet and spicy moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite Read of 2025!!
Elle Kennedy has knocked it out of the park with this next generation romance. Everything in this book made it the perfect read for me. The level of banter, humour and spice were spot on.
I was giggling and had a big smile on my face throughout this entire book. The scene with Shane and the PowerPoint, had me howling, or should I say had me silently howling because I had my 6 month old son sleeping on my chest and was trying my best not to wake him up.
It has been a while since I've felt this passionate about a romance book I've read. I'm already thinking about doing a reread. Elle Kennedy is, without a doubt, one of my favourite romance authors of all time, easily top 3, if not number 1.
I'm definitely gonna dive straight into the next book in the Campus Diaries series and already predict it will also be a five-star read.
100% recommend.
