Poe: Nevermore (The Poe Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Elenora Allison Poe is twenty-four years old, drowning in debt and depression, and very alone, having been orphaned at the age of two and raised in an unloving household. Suffering from insomnia and PTSD from a traumatic experience seven years before, Poe keeps everyone at arm's length. Then, she meets homicide detective Caleb Frost and her life changes dramatically. Frost sees Poe's brokenness in perfect clarity and sympathizes with her. However, just when Poe is starting to let him in, she discovers a horrible truth: she is the sole direct descendant of Edgar Allan Poe, inheriting not only the last name of one of the world's most famous poets, but also a terrible family curse that takes the form of the master of the macabre's most haunting tales. If Poe cannot recognize the curse unfolding in time, it will destroy the lives of all those close to her and annihilate her sanity.

Review

"I highly recommend this book for my fellow edge-of-our-seat junkies—those of us who are constantly seeking the book we ever so briefly fear picking up, then can't put down in the relentless pursuit of discovering whatever comes next! Martens' Poe: Nevermore deliciously feeds these cravings along with satisfying those with classical literary interests. I anxiously look forward to reading Marten's next installment of Poe." -Chanticleer Book Reviews & Media

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR: 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊!
I don’t think any words I use will compare to this haunting masterpiece that is Poe: Nevermore. The author had such a way with words from start to finish in this gothic first novel that I was sucked in and couldn’t put it down. Physically and mentally, I did not want to. I was drawn in with Edgar Allen Poe, but that doesn’t even begin to compare to this dark and mentally twisted story. I absolutely loved this book.

This book was tough to finish. I’m sure that was the author’s intention. My issue lies in the level of darkness. I can cope with dark material if there’s some lightness added, such as humor or intimacy, but this had none of that. There was too much death and destruction for my liking. The villains were plain evil, no redeeming qualities. I also wanted to shake some sense into Poe to snap out of it, which is likely my ignorance of depression. I couldn’t possibly read another installment.

I hadn’t heard of this book or author until I met Rachel Martens at Pumpkinfest in Three Lakes Wisconsin. I like to support local authors so I bought this book without any actual high expectations. Wow, was I in for a ride! Each new chapter grabbed me as the story kept getting more intense. Thanks for this unique story! I’ll be buying the rest of the series for sure!
