For the Love of God: A Memoir Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

In 1972, the only thing Jackie knew about God was a memorized prayer. She was twenty-two, married twice, and divorced once. After several failed attempts to get out of her turbulent second marriage, she eventually leaves with her three-month-old daughter in her arms.

For a few weeks, all’s well until Jackie takes Jenny to the pediatrician. With averted eyes, the pediatrician announces that Jenny is profoundly brain-damaged. When Jackie determines to care for her daughter by herself rather than put her in an institution, Jenny’s pediatrician urges her to include a social life. To pay for Jenny’s mounting medical bills and still have a social life, Jackie works two jobs: a cocktail waitress on weekends and an office girl at Cessna during the week. Her promiscuous lifestyle contrasts with her resolve to give Jenny all the care she needs.

Through all the twists and turns, God is in the background, but never in the forefront—that is—until Jackie has nowhere else to go.

Review

Guinn is a skilled dramatist of her own character, unafraid to portray herself in a bad or selfish light. She also writes with a novelistic attention to detail; here, she describes her office at the Cessna factory: "The room smelled of typewriter ribbon, fresh paper, and cigarette smoke that hovered around the ashtray on my desk. The office sounded of tapping on typewriter keys, clicking on adding machines, and an occasional bing on the window next to me when some guy on the assembly line below threw a rivet at the window beside my desk." The result is a substantial and nuanced chronicle of perseverance.

A rich, complicated account of surviving life's trials.

It is told in such a way that it is as if you are living out moments of life with this author in real-time. For a memoir, it is quite a triumph! ... After Jackie's three-year-old daughter died, she and her husband had four children. Jackie stayed home, raised and home-schooled them until their freshman year of high school.

When the youngest of her four children was sixteen, she claimed that they all were tired of her looking over their shoulders. Her twenty-year-old daughter commented that Jackie needed to “get a life.” So, she did. She decided to become a secondary English Language Arts teacher. That summer, her heart pounded as she stepped into her first class at Johnson Country Community College as a “non-traditional” student. Five years later, Jackie received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas, and three years after that, she received her master’s degree. She was fifty-three when she taught her first classes of junior and sophomore students in a public high school.

Jackie Guinn has been a Christian for almost fifty years, and she has led many to the Lord through discipleship and teaching small women’s groups. She retired five years ago after teaching high school for fifteen years. She now spends her time writing and traveling with her husband of almost fifty years. Jackie and her husband, Allan, live in Kansas City.

This was such a beautiful but tragic story. Jackie was only 25 years old when she lost her handicapped daughter Jenny. Through her upbringing and Jenny Jackie came to know God. This is such a phenomenal bittersweet book, I can't recommend it enough. Also, I couldn't put it down and finished it in a day and a half.
