Not the typical vampire story

This was a new word where humans were the predators and vampires the prey. Mira was a vampire, a slave and a warrior and she had to fight for her life in the arena for the human’s entertainment and keep winning to evade death. She was the city champion but had no benefits or concessions. She was feared and constantly punished because of her fiery and dangerous behavior. She had never been defeated in the Arena but when she lost her first fight everything changed for her. The Regent, Lucian Stavros, was interested in her. He had been raised thinking that vampires were vile assassins without emotions and now he was questioning his belief. He had been observing her and was curious because her behavior was not as he expected of a vampire. He saved her life and became her Patron. But there were ulterior motives to his actions and Mina didn’t trust him. She suspected what was going on and it scared her more than the punishments. Different from the vampire stories I’m used to read. The story remembered me of the series Spartacus and the gladiators. Mira was stronger from the regular vampires in the story and used her strength and fighting skills to survive. But still she was ready to embrace death as a way to get freedom. This is the first book that I read from this author and really liked how the theme was developed. The story attracted my attention as soon as I saw what it was about and my expectations were filled. The characters were interesting, the narrations intense, the battles fiery with much violence and the suspense about the fate that awaits Mina and Lucian will make me look for more. The author had made a very good work with this story. Received the ARC for an honest review.

When civilization fell, vampires came out of the darkness and helped the human race to survive. Then, once they no longer needed them, the humans turned on the vampires and turned them into slaves. Our heroine, an arena fighter, wants to change that, or die trying.

So this is a combination of urban fantasy and distopian story. I have to say that I dislike bigotry in all its forms, so I did not like the setting of this story, but then it is a dystopian story, so you are not supposed to like it. That being said, it is the characters that saved it for me. I really liked our heroine as she was tough and snarky, although she didn't seem to learn or adapt very quickly. The story itself was well written with an easy to follow plot and our heroine did draw me in as I wanted to see where she would end up. In the end, I did enjoy the ride and plan to read/listen to the next part of the story when I get a chance.

Two additional notes. First, this review is based on the audio book version of the story.

Second, while the story does not end on a cliffhanger, it also does not resolve all of the issues in the story and will definitely leave you wondering what comes next. I am okay with that, but be aware of it before starting.

I did receive this book free for an honest review. And I am truly impressed with the world K.A. Salidas has created. A world where Humans don't actually kill the vampire, but enslaves them.

Mira, is a vampire who has been enslaved and used by her Owner as a gladiator. Because Mira is a very effective gladiator having never been defeated, her rebellious attitude is admirable. She is a strong dominant, intelligent female. My kind of story. Her life is slightly lower than the filth she is forced to live with. Who does she defeat in the arena to the delight of the cheering humans? Other Vampire gladiators of course. Humans love that vampires are forced to kill other vampires, instead of them.

The human elite have for many, many years educated their masses on how vile and dangerous vampires are. They simply are barbaric savages not worth saving but for these games. Lucien Stavros is the Regent of the Iron Gate where Mira fights. It is his task to either save or condemn the defeated vampire. Usually that meant one more dead vampire.

Mira's rebellious attitude forces her to continually try to escape form her living hell and search for freedom. During one such escape attempt, she meets Lucien face to face. And she is not what he was taught she was. He was not what she anticipated. The story gets even more interesting from here. But I do not disclose.

This is an incredibly original world that I want to continue reading about. This book ended to soon in my opinion and now I hunger for the next one in The Chronicles of the Uprising.

Well written, just didn't catch me as much as I expected. Maybe just too much pain and torture for me, but for a worthy cause in the end......and it ended so abruptly that I didn't even realize I was at the end. A true cliff hanger, when it was just really beginning for me.

Being a big fan of Katie Salidas' work, it came as no real surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed her new novel, "Dissension".
Set in a dystopian future, vampires are enslaved by the humans and forced to fight to the death in a bloody battle for entertainment - a la the gladiators of Ancient Rome. Our protagonist, Mira, is the steely, undefeated champion in the arena, just waiting for the chance she needs to attemlt her escape. An instantly likeable character, Mira is true warrior. When she meets the Regent - a very important Elite in society - there is instant chemistry, led by a mutual, and perhaps morbid, curiosity about one another.

"Dissension" is a shining example of how the recently coined New Adult genre really can work brilliantly. Aspects of YA combined with more mature themes makes for a perfect concoction.
It speaks volumes to her talent as a writer that Ms. Salidas is able to effortlessly succeed where so many before her have failed.

The flawless, connectable writing combined with an exciting, dangerous and witty story, makes this one of Salidas' best works yet. I can't wait to read the next one!

The experience of reading Katie's novels is enhanced greatly by following her on Facebook and Twitter. She keeps her fans updated daily on her progress and on her busy life as a mother, wife, and writer! Brutal mortal combat in a Roman-style exhibition arena? Check? World-altering political machinations happening in the background? Check. Megalomaniacal tyrant bent on shaping the world in his image? Check. In other words, Dissension covers the full spectrum. And does it in a way that gives a nod to what could have been the source material but creates it's own unique world.
