"Laurens successfully brings her Adventurers Quartet, following The Daredevil Snared (2016), to a resounding conclusion. The broad literary canvas, swashbuckling adventures, dangerous intrigue, and steamy romance of these novels are rare treats for readers who miss those old-school historical romances by Shirlee Busbee and Katherine Woodiwiss." --Booklist on LORD OF THE PRIVATEERS

"Laurens's rich characterization and well-thought-out plot make for a captivating adventure romance and provide elements of danger and surprise throughout the story. The vivid narrative, combined with quick cuts from scene to scene, make for an engrossing read with an ending poised to continue the adventure with yet another Frobisher brother." –Publisher's Weekly, starred review, on The Daredevil Snared

"An unusual and winsome historical romance." –Publishers Weekly on THE DESIGNS OF LORD RANDOLPH CAVANAUGH

"Brimming over with energetic atmosphere and drawing on the Victorian passion for invention/technology, Laurens crafts a love story that suits her style and the era's history. Certainly a series starter to enjoy." -RT Book Reviews on THE DESIGNS OF LORD RANDOLPH CAVANAUGH

#1 New York Times bestselling author Stephanie Laurens began writing romances as an escape from the dry world of professional science. Her hobby quickly became a career when her first novel was accepted for publication, and with entirely becoming alacrity, she gave up writing about facts in favor of writing fiction.

Laurens's novels are set in the time period of the British Regency, and her settings range from Scotland to India. Laurens has published fifty works of historical romance, including 29 New York Times bestsellers. All her works are continuously available in print and digital formats in English worldwide, and have been translated into many other languages. An international bestseller, among other accolades Laurens has received the Romance Writers of America prestigious RITA Award for Best Romance Novella 2008, for The Fall of Rogue Gerrard.

Her continuing novels featuring the Cynster family are widely regarded as classics of the genre. Other series include the Bastion Club Novels and the Black Cobra Quartet.

Following is a brief autobiography of Stephanie's life before becoming a romance novelist:

My early life was not all that ordinary - I was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) many years ago, at a time when the recently independent British colony still behaved socially very much like an outpost of the British Raj. So I know what "tiffin" is. It was a strange society - one that has now died - but I still remember snippets.

At age 5, my family upped stakes and moved permanently to Melbourne, Australia, where they've remained ever since. I did all my schooling in Melbourne, finished university with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, then moved on, together with my husband, acquired along the way, to London.

Of course, we didn't just hop on a plane and fly. No. We took what proved to be one of the last true overland journeys from Katmandu to London - through northern India and the Ganges valley, up into Kashmir to laze on houseboats on the lake at Srinigar, then through Pakistan and on up the Khyber Pass into Afghanistan (pre-destruction). From Kabul, we continued west, across Iran (then still with the Shah), down to Isfahan, then up to the Caspian Sea, then all the way across Turkey to the ages-old fascination of Istanbul. I still have the most vivid memories of Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey - the most wonderfully dramatic and lonely scenery - places where Nature really impinged on your consciousness. After wandering across Europe, we eventually reached London, after what will undoubtedly rank as the journey of our lives.

In London, I took up a position as a research scientist - and my husband did, too. We lived in a lovely little cottage - a 16th century woodcutter's cottage, complete with 16th century tiles (you can tell by the wooden pegs that hold them on), built onto an oast house (those places with conical roofs where they used to dry hops), surrounded on all sides by the lush green fields of rural Kent. Of course, next door was the protected remains of a 1st century Roman villa, and down the lane was a 14th century castle, still owned by the original family. The main house was now mostly Queen Anne in style, but with some Tudor buildings still remaining.

We spent 4 wonderful years living in England, touring England, France, Spain, Portugal and northern Italy, entirely off the beaten track. Provincial France became a favorite haunt; Portugal was a different sort of paradise. On our return to Australia, we both continued on with scientific research - in my case, in the cancer research field. I remained in cancer research, rising through the ranks to heading my own laboratory...until fate took a hand.

I had read romances since I was 13 - when my mother borrowed Georgette Heyer's romances from a workmate, and I read them after her. These Old Shades was the first one I read - I was hooked for life. In England, I'd had the opportunity to stock up with Regency romances that were never available in the US or Australia - I still have shelves of them. After our return to Australia, one day I literally ran out of books to read. I wanted a new Regency romance - but there were none in the stores. In desperation, I decided to write one - something I'd always had a hankering to do, but never done.

So I did. I just sat down and wrote the story, writing at night and on weekends, primarily to entertain myself. To my surprise, being one of those people who always have craft projects lying around unfinished for years, I actually finished the book - mainly, I suspect, because I wanted to know the end. But there it was - and it didn't seem too bad. Perhaps....

That first manuscript became TANGLED REINS, my first romance - a British Regency romance published by Mills & Boon. Subsequently, I wrote 7 more Regency romances for Mills & Boon.

Somewhere along the line, I faced the fact that the life of a research scientist, certainly at the level I had now reached, had palled. Stress levels were too high. But I now had something else I could do - I could write romances.

So I "retired" from scientific life, to more relaxed and fulfilling endeavors, and at much the same time, crossed the Atlantic publishing-wise, and, after some uncertain times, eventually signed on with Avon.

The rest, as they say, is history!

I enjoyed the plot of this, the various misadventures and minor and major villains. The FMC and MMC were a lovely pair and work well together, which I gather is a theme of this series. I believe this is the first Laurens novel I’ve read where the MCs don’t have sex until after they married, which was a fun and interesting way to build tension. Lovely!

My rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.

This book is well-written, because Stephanie Laurens is a talented writer. I've read a lot of her books, and have always enjoyed them -- so I wanted to read this series, too.

I liked Kit, and liked that he was immediately willing to help Sylvia with her school. With his status as nobility, his support was invaluable, and helped the school immensely. I also liked that he chose to help several people during the story, sometimes when they had already attempted to damage his business.

I liked Sylvia, especially her determination to educate boys who would not normally be allowed to get an education. However, I absolutely detested her behavior at Rand and Felicia's wedding. She treated Kit terribly, and there was absolutely no excuse for how rude she was. I was actually really surprised that he forgave her as easily as he did-- because she did NOT deserve it. She never really even apologized to him for that either.

I liked that Kit understood very quickly that Sylvia was the woman for him -- but he didn't try to rush her, since he knew she needed time to come to the same conclusion.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

This book was fantastic. The story moves along quickly with a hopeful tone. The storyline is both action and character oriented, but the characters are the strongest recommendation of this story. Kit is finally coming into his own, after the horrors of his mother's machinations. He has no plans of doing more than building superior yachts, until a fire-breathing lady takes him and his new business to task for setting her school out on the streets! There are lots of twists and turns and a good many surprises. There were a few mildly steamy scenes, but not until over halfway through the story. You want to at least read book one, about Lord Randolph, before this. But I really think you should also read The Taming of Ryder Cavanaugh before either of these. I can't wait to see the next story, which I think will be the sister Stacie. Enjoy!

I like most all of Stephanie Laurens's books. This ranks among my favorites along with the first book in this miniseries. The characters and the settings were different and very interesting. I highly recommend this book.

Stephanie Laurens does not disappoint. Ever. She always delivers nuanced, passionate characters. She always comes down on the side of the greater good while giving her readers a gentle glimpse into the social and cultural environment of her period romance. Often she throws in a bit of a mystery. This book is ALL of that. In this series, her stories revolve around the inventors and inventions of the industrial revolution. Kind of like steam punk romance, heavy emphasis on the romance. Top shelf.

I thought this book was a little slower and at times boring. More than I wanted to know about yacht building. Loved the children in the story. Sylvia and Kit were average characters. An okay read.

The only problem that I had was that the villain came out of left field and I had a problem relating to him. No matter, she s still one of my favorite authors.

This book starts out with hero and heroine not really liking each other based on impressions during the wedding of hero's brother's wedding! BUT from then on--this book draws you in and you are "hooked"!
This author has the perfect touch of sensual with out details I really don't need or want! Her tempo is perfect and the characters (even villain) is drawn in perfect detail!
I loved this book and it was a relief to find a book by an adult established author to read with no silly grammar or actions that would NOT have been acceptable in this period of time.
I have either in paperback or E-book every book by this author and love her dearly for all the work put into each novel!

I love Stephanie Laurens books and ‘The pursuits of Kit Cavanaugh ‘was no exception Stephanie Laurens writes strong and believable heroes and heroines. There is always a well developed storyline and character development that keeps the reader engrossed and very satisfied at the end with a happy HEA I enjoyed having other characters from her previous books revisit and the sense of belonging to the family this brings to the story I’ve enjoyed this series and look forward to the next.

When I read this second instalment of the Cavanaughs sub series, I fully expected it to be drawn into the world of new Victorian developments, just as in the previous book "The designs of Randolph Cavanaugh" had been. There it was all about a steam propelled engine, complete with pipes, valves, pressure etc In fact, here we learn very little about yacht designing and making, although this is the world around which the story revolves. That was a pity.
Although the book was entertaining and the main characters very engaging, I did not feel I was really rooting for them. Apart from the arch villain - there has to be one, of course! - all the characters were too good to be true and behaved admirably. I loved the eager young school boys/apprentices, but kept thinking that one of the new employees, the foreman or the secretary were going to have a black mark on their character. But no, the villain, whose motivation was somewhat farfetched it has to be said, was the only unredeemable bad apple.
Kit was nice, helpful understanding and amazingly, able to restrain himself and not consummate the marriage before the appointed day! A very likeable hero.
So I enjoyed spending a few hours with Kit and Sylvia, but I felt much more could have been made of this story. Let's see how the next Cavanaugh sibling, Lady Eustacia, shrugs off the malevolent influence of their mother.
