About the Author

Grace Livingston Hill was born on April 16, 1865 to a Presbyterian Minister, Charles and a published author, Marcia, in Wellsville, New York. For her twelfth birthday, Hills Aunt Pansy had one of her stories published in a book of short stories. This was the beginning of Hills career as a writer. In 1886, Hill and her family moved to Winter Park, Florida, where she got a job teaching gymnastics at a local college. She wrote her first real book there, in an effort to raise money for a family vacation to Chautauqua Lake. The book was called Chatauqua Idyl and was published in 1887 by D. Lothrop and Company, the same publisher that printed her first story when she was twelve. Hill was eventually married and began a family, but lost her husband to appendicitis. At this point in her life, her writing was the only means she had to keep food on the table and money in her pockets. In her lifetime, Hill wrote over a hundred books, only two of which were non-fiction. Grace Livingston Hill died in 1947 at the age of 82.

MIRANDA is One of My Favorite Characters in Literature - MILD SPOILERS

This is one of my favorite GLH books and is the third in a series, starting with MARCIA SCHUYLER, and continuing with PHOEBE DEANE, and ending with MIRANDA. And what a wonderful ending to this series, where Miranda started out as an homely, unloved and lonely child who had so much to give, and growing into a beautiful woman who found the love she deserves.

Miranda is one of those characters in literature that stands out because of her strength, outspokenness, and her capacity for loyalty and love. In the first two books, she plays a role that seemed minor at first, and grew in importance in the second book, until the last book gives her a starring role as the heroine she really is. Such an inspiring woman!

The characters from the earlier novel, MARCIA SCHUYLER, play a large role in this book and it is all the more fun to read because we all wanted to know how Marcia's life turned out. In MIRANDA, the Spafford family are great friends and supporters of Miranda, just as she was to them in the first book. SO. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO READ "MARCIA SCHUYLER" FIRST, because you will enjoy this book so much more when you already know and love many of the characters. There is also a tantalizing sub-plot involving the second generation of Spafford children and their neighbors.

My only criticism is a section in the middle of this novel that follows the travels of an historical person who really existed but was put in a fictional situation. I never like when this is done, and this part distracted from the principal story. It is a relatively short passage, though, and eventually tied back into the main narrative. I would rather have focused on the central tale and the novel would have been better without this diversion.

So, if you like clean, wholesome romance, if you like historical novels that are fictional but set in a backdrop of true events, if you like books that are uplifting and easy to read, then you might love MIRANDA! She is a "brick"! And when you read this book, you will know what that means! ;-)

My favorite of the three in the series

While I have to admit that I don't care for Grace Livingston Hill's making Miranda speak in a somewhat illiterate style, it's true that she probably wouldn't have had the best vocabulary and grammar around. Still, I get tired of seeing "mountain" pronounced as "mounting". But, that said, I can whole-heartedly recommend this book. As nearly everyone mentions, it's the third in a series that Grace wrote, starting with "Marcia Schyler". This book came after "Phoebe Deane" and wound up the series. I've always thought it was the best of the three. A large part of it is based on actual history (which is true of the other two as well) and it tells of missionaries helping the indians and being caught up in an uprising. This book takes place a lot earlier in time than most of Hill's book (I believe it's in the late 1840's) like the first two in the series, and so they have a different tone from most of Hill's work. If you like Christian fiction with a slightly historical slant, give it a read.

I read a lot of Grace L. Hill while I was a young adult. Recently I stumbled across some of her books again and am finding them captivating the second time around!

This book (Miranda) is the 3rd book in the Marcia Schuyler trilogy. All three of the books are well worth reading. If you are like me and want good, wholesome reading materials, you can't go wrong with Grace Livingston Hill!

I purchased this for my Kindle -- as I do all books I order if they are available in Kindle format -- and am reminded once again how convenient it is to purchase books this way. It is delivered instantly to my Kindle. You can't beat that!

I have been enjoyed Grace Livingston Hill's books for several years. I'd heard of them when I was younger but never read one until I got my Kindle. Now it's loaded with her books! That said, Miranda is not one of my favorites. I very much enjoy historical novels, but the long discourses on politics, inventions, westward travel, etc. were not interesting to me. And Miranda's vernacular was very annoying. She was portrayed as an intelligent woman, yet her speech was backward. The book was okay, and although I skipped through some of the ponderous sections, I did finish it. Just not one of my favorite GLH novels.

Another wonderful book by Grace Livingston Hill, and early and gifted writer. I've read several books by this author and have enjoyed them all. The stories are interesting, well written and have well-developed characters. The protagonist of this novel, Miranda, is a jewel of a character. My only minor quibble about her is the 'dialect' of the character, which made for more difficult reading of her 'voice'. The historical aspects were very enlightening...I knew virtually nothing of the history of Oregon before reading this novel. The sweet romance was very long in coming, nearly at the end of the book, and seemed to be realized rather quickly when it did come. I was also a bit put-off by the violence toward the missionaries at the end, after their years of love and devoted help for the natives. Assuming that particular part was fiction, at least as far as those characters were concerned, it was a bit hard to take. All in all, I highly recommend the book for clean, honorable, well-written reading.
